Wine Advocate 95 points

Backward, powerful, and extremely tannic, the dense purple-colored 2003 Mouton-Rothschild, a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, fashioned from yields of 28 hectoliters per hectare, with a finished alcohol of 12.9%, improves dramatically with aeration. With full-bodied, meaty, powerful, dry flavors as well as a huge finish, this high class wine should be at its finest...

Wine Information

Climatic conditions
2003 will remain in the memory as the year of a heatwave summer and an early vintage. After a cold and dry winter, 37% less rain fell in the spring than the average for the last 40 years. August was exceptionally hot, with temperatures frequently rising above 40° C and less rainfall than normal for the season.
However the vines, being deeply-rooted, never really suffered from a lack of water and produced a crop of healthy...

Vintage 2003

2003 was the hottest vintage ever seen in Bordeaux. The most successful châteaux have passed their exceptional 2000s and some claim to have made their greatest wines in living memory.

Very dry and extremely hot summer days and nights (16 days > 95°F compared to 2 in 2000, 6 in 2005, 4 in 2009). Need to eliminate the superscript here. I can't figure out how to do it.) The deeply colored reds, low acidities and high tannins are a departure fr...

Written Notes

The 2003 Mouton Rothschild had a sweet, ripe style typical of the vintage and was almost psychedelic. Its palate was round with flavors of coffee grinds, pleasant and easy, not as rock n’ roll as I have come to expect from this overheated vintage (93).

Finally. After this, I only have the vintage 2000 of Mouton left to taste, and I will have tasted every vintage of Mouton made in my lifetime. My first 03 Mouton, and if I had to guess how it should be, I would have landed on the exact behavior of the wine. So Mouton, and so 2003. Deep ruby, rich, lush, exotic and fruity. Layered of vanilla, leather, spices and a wealth of dark berries. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, savory and superb palate, fresher feel than one could expect from the nose. Marvelous complexity and very nuanced. Incredible length.
