The Story

Château Mouton Rothschild A Premier Cru Classé in 1973, Château Mouton Rothschild, owned by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, consists of 205 acres of vines near Pauillac, in the Médoc, North West of the city of Bordeaux. This Premier Cru benefits from exceptionally good natural conditions, both in the quality of the soil, the position of its vines and their exposure to the sun. It is regarded today as one of the world's greatest wine.

Unbalanced, Sharp and Drying tannins

Written Notes

This singular bottle came in a mixed lot from a small Cannes auction. Perfect bottle condition, level high-shoulder. Deep, surprisingly youthful, clean colour. Promising mature, cedary and sound nose. Not much weight or complexity but still has some gentle tannins and dry fruit flavours left. A bit too acidic and rather one-dimensional wine with a tough and long finish. Even though it probably has never been a great or a big wine, it has held surprisingly well, and is still pretty drinkable today. A one-of-its-kind experience!

We continued on to the rockin’ Fifties, beginning with a 1958 Mouton Rothschild. It was a touch musty with some minerals in its nose, but it was tough to get much out of it aromatically. Its palate was cinnamon and jasmine, almost incense like in character. It was another ‘not bad’ wine, still pretty with some nice tannin expressions. There was a touch of cork to its cinnamon flavors, but it was still pleasant (88).
