A firm and compact Mouton with a powerful tannin frame for the vintage, yet it remains fine and precise as it opens to a velvety texture. Black fruit with tar, pencil lead and tobacco. Driven and firm. A little angular and tight at the moment.  (5/2022)

Written Notes

The 2021 Bordeaux vintage was shaped by cooler temperatures, early-season frost, and a long, late-ripening cycle—conditions that rewarded top terroirs and meticulous vineyard work. For estates like Mouton, with its superb gravel croupe and exceptional resources, the vintage produced wines of purity, classical structure, and remarkable aromatic precision. Lower alcohol, higher natural acidity, and beautifully fine tannins define the year, placing 2021 among the most chiseled, elegant, and terroir-driven Moutons of recent decades.

The Mouton Rothschild 2021 is a masterclass in refinement and Pauillac precision—a wine that marries freshness, detail, and depth with effortless grandeur. The nose opens with lifted, crystalline aromas of blackcurrant, redcurrant, and wild blueberry, framed by Mouton’s signature notes of graphite, cedarwood, and finely polished exotic spice. Nuances of violet, crushed mint, pencil lead, and subtle smoke add layers of aromatic complexity.

On the palate, the wine is remarkably pure, vertical, and tightly focused, driven by ultra-fine, silky yet authoritative tannins. The cooler vintage brings superb linearity: flavors of cassis, mulberry, and black cherry glide across the palate with precision. Hints of cocoa nib, black tea, sandalwood, and warm gravel echo through the mid-palate. The acidity is vibrant and seamlessly integrated, giving the wine both energy and finesse. The finish is long, mineral, and beautifully sculpted, leaving a resonant impression of elegance rather than excess.

This is an exceptional Mouton—modern in precision, classical in silhouette, and destined to age extremely gracefully. It captures the very best of a cooler, transparent vintage while retaining the estate’s unmistakable richness of character. Drink from 2030–2055+, with the greatest rewards after a decade or more of cellaring.

Inky deep blackcurrant blackberry fruits, fine graphite/firm and a hint cedary tannins with plentiful toasty/ roasted chestnut/ vanilla notes. Finishes chocolaty firm and minerally with bittersweet notes. A very lovely wine with ample dark fruits, superb richness and energy. Should develop very well. 89% cabernet sauvignon, 10% merlot, 1% cabernet franc.
