Perhaps the most beautiful packaging ever on a Bordeaux bottle, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild literally produced a work of art in the gold-engraved bottle of 2000 Mouton Rothschild. Of course, one can’t drink the glass, but this is a top-flight Mouton Rothschild, eclipsed only by the 2006 and 2009. A rich, tannic, earthy style, with loads of creme de cassis and floral notes, the final blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot is a full-bodied wine with plenty of coffee, earth, chocolatey notes, and still plenty of tannin to resolve. I gave it an anticipated maturity range of 2015-2050 back in 2003, and that looks on target. - WA, RP (6/2010)

The Story

Château Mouton Rothschild A Premier Cru Classé in 1973, Château Mouton Rothschild, owned by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, consists of 205 acres of vines near Pauillac, in the Médoc, North West of the city of Bordeaux. This Premier Cru benefits from exceptionally good natural conditions, both in the quality of the soil, the position of its vines and their exposure to the sun. It is regarded today as one of the world's greatest wine.

The name Mouton is said to be derived from the word „Motte“ meaning mound or elevation of the ground. It was bought in 1853 by Philippe de Rothschilds great-grand father it was in a fairly bad shape and when the classification of 1855 was set up it was not deemed to be good enough to be qualified as a first growth but put in first place amongst the second growths. An injustice it took Philippe de Rothschild until 1973 to rectify. 1920s Philippe de Rothschild called together the owners of Haut Brion, Latour, Lafite, Margaux and Yquem to talk about the idea of bottling and marketing their wines on their own.

The first vintage to be bottled exclusivly at the château was the 1924 vintage. To commemorate this, the cubistic painter Carlu was asked to design the label, yet another revolutionary idea in this most conservative of surroundings. The idea of an artist designing the labels was dropped until 1945 when Philippe Jullian was asked to design a label commemorating the victory over nazi Germany. Since then works of such famous artists as Picasso, Miró, Dali, Chagall and personalities like John Huston and Prince Charles have been used for the labels.

In 1988, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, who had already been associated with her father's work for some time, succeeded her father. She has in turn become the guarantor of the quality of an illustrious wine whose motto proudly proclaims : "Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change". First I am, second I was, I Mouton do not change

Vineyard soil: very deep gravel on a limestone base Production area: 82.5 ha Grape varieties: 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot Average age of vines: 48 years Harvest method: hand picked. The grapes from the younger vines are harvested first and vinified separately.

Winemaking: Before destemming, the grapes are hand-sorted then selected one by one. Vinification depends on each vintage and the characteristics of each vat. All the relevant parameters, such as temperature, pumping over, aeration, vatting time and running off, are monitored by the technical manager, the cellar-master and the laboratory.
Ageing: 19 to 22 months in oak barrels (almost all new, the percentage varying according to the vintage)

Wine Information

THE LITTLE AUGSBURG RAM
Each year since 1945, the Château Mouton Rothschild label has been illustrated with an original work by a famous painter.
For 2000, in an exceptional departure from this tradition, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild wanted the entire bottle to become a collector's item in itself.
She therefore chose one of the treasures of the Museum of Wine in Art at Mouton Rothschild, the little "Augsburg Ram", a 16th century silver-gilt drinking vessel and the Mouton emblem, to be reproduced on each bottle in all its original lustre. With remarkable craft and skill, the glassmaker B.S.N found the solution, using a new technique for enamelling in relief, developed specially for the purpose. Thus, a treasure from the past and modern know-how have combined to create a receptacle of golden beauty for a prestigious vintage: Château Mouton Rothschild 2000.

Climatic conditions
After a cold, dry start to the year, a change in the weather pattern brought higher-than-average temperatures and rainfall from February. Budding took place at the end of March, and the mild weather persisted through April. May and June were very warm, with average rainfall; a number of storms were recorded in May.

The first flowers appeared on 23 May. Rapid and even flowering augured well for the rest of the vegetation cycle. The first fortnight of July, cool and wet, was followed by a prolonged period of fine weather. A generally reliable indicator of future quality, the mid-veraison point was noted 7 to 8 days earlier than average for Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, and two days earlier than average for Cabernet Franc.

A few very hot days in late July and early August interrupted the growth of the vine, helping to concentrate sugar and phenolics in the berries. The fine weather continued in September; some light rain ensured that the crop reached full maturity.
The harvest took place in good conditions, with plenty of sun during the day. The grapes were healthy, well-coloured, tannic and full of flavour.

Vuosikerta 2000

Weather conditions / The 2000 vintage was proclaimed from the start as one of the best vintages of modern times. In the spring of 2003, I had many opportunities to find out if we really had a true dream vintage on our hands.

During the 2000 harvest, while doing a “personal inspection” in the vineyards, I noticed that something extraordinary was on the way. The grapes looked extremely healthy.

While the sorting table was rolling, I observed that there were few leaves, stems and weeds among the grapes. This is why sorting the grapes was so easy and quick. This must be one of the characteristics of the 2000 vintage, because normally even great vintages require a lot of work at the sorting table.

The 2000 vintage is a classic, extravagant and extremely long Bordeaux with dark and extremely dense wines, which have a huge concentration of fruit, length and superbly concentrated tannins. The tannin is not allowed to dominate, as it is well enveloped by the fruit. A scent of under-ripeness is only present in a few wines. One of the hallmarks of this vintage is an intense, deep aroma of dark berries, such as blueberries, blackberries and black cherries.

All red grape varieties have reached perfect maturity, including Bordeaux's most temperamental and unruly grape variety, Petit Verdot. Petit Verdot brings to wines the long-awaited addition of backbone and power.

Additionally, the grapes for whites, such as Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle, ripened perfectly and produced extremely fine dry white wines. The sweet white wines have unfortunately transformed into some light, elegant and charming wines, based 100% on the September harvest. From October 11, it rained a lot in Bordeaux and this continued until the end of the year.

It had a sweet, seductive nose full of rich, sweet, creamy and nutty fruit. There was incredible musk and earth to its pure and long nose. Its t'n a blended skillfully into its fruit, and the 2000 possessed a great freshness overall. It seemed as if it hadn't shut down yet, as many 2000's have been observed to do. I spoke too soon, as it was shier on the palate with light grit and long acidity. There were lots of earth and carob flavors and a touch of black currant, along with secondary flavors of coffee and raisinets. It lost its focus a little bit compared to the 1998 and seemed to still be in a 'teen' phase. Someone found it 'a little New World'

What could be a more perfect start for the new millennium than the 2000 vintage, already hailed as legendary? Very good, bright and intense colour. Wonderful, classic Cabernet nose with the touch of crème de cassis, truffles and cedar. A wine of enormous constitution and overwhelming power. Aromas of very ripe raspberries, with bread crumbs and tobacco. Excellent depth and ripeness with good balance. Long and tannic finish. A truly respectable masterpiece of this château.

The Mouton 2000 has incredible on the nose, showing coffee cake, blackberry, floral, coffee bean and vanilla bean, with oriental spices. A very complex, full-bodied red, with seamless, hyperpolished tannins that caress every millimeter of the palate. Lasts for minutes. So beautifully balanced, I'm left speechless.

Ruby. Blueberries, scented, fruity, dark berries, layers of dark fruits, spices, nuanced, detailed, exotic, superb nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, dark fruity, spices, nuanced, detailed, layered, sublime texture, layers of soft and caressing dark fruits, spices, stunning length. 99

A dense, smooth and opulent wine bursting with ripe Cabernet Sauvignon flavors. It's regal and well structured, balancing the natural exuberance of Mouton with a more severe side. This is a wine with power, yet not without its charms from the fruitiness and final acidity. This great wine will age many, many years.

Consistent notes. Still a baby! Enormous intensity, depth, length and concentration. Unbelieveable effort!
