The Story

Château Mouton Rothschild A Premier Cru Classé in 1973, Château Mouton Rothschild, owned by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, consists of 205 acres of vines near Pauillac, in the Médoc, North West of the city of Bordeaux. This Premier Cru benefits from exceptionally good natural conditions, both in the quality of the soil, the position of its vines and their exposure to the sun. It is regarded today as one of the world's greatest wine.

Wine Information

Climatic conditions

Although 2015 was slightly warmer than average, it was above all very dry (706 mm of rain, compared with an annual average of 862 mm), especially between February and July, from budbreak to veraison. As a result the berries remained small, which explains why the yield was rather low even though we had hopes of a normal crop after flowering.

Higher-than-average rainfall in August and September helped to prevent the rip...

Vuosikerta 2015

Complete 2015 Bordeaux report by Andrew Caillard MW “Next in line of a great series of vintages; 2000, 2005, 2009, 2010 & 2015.”

2015 is a wonderful Bordeaux vintage without the hype or hysteria associated with 2009 and 2010. The wines are generally expressive and generous with marvellous concentration and structure. Give another year in barrel, the wines should gain more fruit complexity and volume. The Châteaux, across all sub-region...

This could hit 100 Pts when fully mature. And, why not? There is a gorgeous symmetry here, balancing intensity, concentration, length, purity, and elegance, along with a close to seamless finish that delivers layer after layer of opulent, flamboyant fruits that hold your focus for close to 60 seconds! Drink from 2025-2065.

Sweet, opulent and quite forward for a first growth, this vintage of Mouton has charm and a wonderful approachability. The firm tannins and body is well well structured but wrapped around ripe, sweet blackberry and plum fruit. A beautiful Mouton with charm and sweetness.

The crème de la crème from the northern Médoc is the 2015 Mouton Rothschild and this incredible wine flirts with perfection. Made from 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot, this inky purple-colored effort offers sensational Cabernet flare in its crème de cassis, graphite, lead pencil shavings, floral, and Asian spice aromas and flavors. It is full-bodied, dense, and incredibly concentrated, yet still has the sexy, opulent, seductive style of the vintage front and center. It will be a candidate for perfection in 10-12 years and is going to be one of the longest-lived wines in the vintage. Hats off to Philippe Dhalluim and his team for this incredible effort that’s a step up over just about every other northern Médoc out there!

Ruby. Blueberries, scented, detailed, exotic spices, nuanced, layered, incredible nose, packing a complexity in there at such an early stage that is rare. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fresh, fruity, dark berries, spices, layered, deep, intense, just goes on and on in perfect harmony, incredible depth, long. I noticed everyone was more happy with this after primeurs than I was, and now it is confirmed that to be correct. Drink over the next 70 years or so. 98

82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc. 57% of the crop. Very majestic nose. Obviously first-growth quality. Savoury and plush in terms of texture. Restrained without being a wimp. Lovely scent. Dry finish but with some of Mouton's opulence before then. Very fine. Very exciting. Some saline sap as well as all the ripe fruit. 19/20 points (4/2016)

The 2015 Mouton Rothschild is a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc aged in 100% new oak with a mid-July 2017 bottling. Deep garnet-purple colored, this Mouton pulls off an incredibly impactful entrance, emerging from the glass with profound notes of blackberry preserves, plum pudding, crème de cassis and grilled meats, featuring perfectly accessorized accents of sandalwood, cinnamon stick and fenugreek with wafts of dried roses, unsmoked cigars and tilled soil. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is completely packed with rich, ripe black fruits sparked with blue and red fruit undertones and an incredible structure of very firm, very ripe tannins, with seamless freshness and an epically long, earth-laced finish. Possessing striking natural beauty framed by impeccable crafting, this 2015 is a total diva and well worth attention. Give it a good 7-8 years in bottle, at least, and drink it over the next 30+ years.

Tasted in April 2016. It was refined, sophisticated, rich, excellent complexity and structure, great acidity and powerful finish. Immensly complete wine.

  • 97p
Dark purple red with violet hue and black core. Gorgeous wine with complex character, excellent nose with ripe blackcurrants, hints of graphite, vanilla, dark chocolate and cocoa, hints of toasted aromas. With some oxygen opening up very well. On the palate perfectly ripe tannins, elegant freshness, juicy fruit in the background. A great Mouton, one of the best ever tasted en primeur .
  • 98p
Deep colour. Intense pure cassis, mulberry herb aromas with praline mocha notes. Well concentrated and elegant with a rich saturated robe of cassis redcurrant, flavours, cedar ginger oak and plentiful tannins. Supple yet muscular and gravelly. Has strength and finesse. Very fine wine this year. 98 points

Sisäpiiritietoa

The 2015 Mouton-Rothschild is a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc matured entirely in new oak, as usual. This represents a relatively high percentage of Merlot simply because, as winemaker Philippe Dhalluin told me, that quality was so good. I afforded my sample four to five minutes to open as it was a little reduced at first, but eventually it reveals a gorgeous, extraordinarily intense bouquet of blackberry, cassis, incense and cold slate aromas. In some ways it reminds me of Latour as much as Mouton Rothschild. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannin, perfectly pitched acidity, wonderful tension and impressive length. There is a strong graphite theme running through from start to finish that is little grainy and so it will require preferably a decade in cellar. But what freshness and panache here, a classic Mouton-Rothschild that will live for 50 or 60 years, not a million miles away from say, the 1986 or 2010. Expect this to settle at the top of my banded score once in bottle. Drink 2027-2060

Neal Martin, Wine Advocate (224), April 2016

Very racy and refined with super polished tannins and focused dark fruits. Blackberry, orange peel, and black currants. Full. Very long and thought-provoking. A wine that delivers power and finesse. Juicy and fresh.

Score: 96/97

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, March 2016

A bold, dramatic wine, the 2015 Mouton-Rothschild sweeps across the palate with remarkable depth. Seemingly endless layers seem to open as the 2015 fills out its broad, ample frame. The tannins are silky and creamy, which give the 2015 much of its voluptuous, inviting personality, while the finish is both remarkably vivid and persistent. This is an especially dark, powerful Mouton. Tasted two times.

Score: 94/97

Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, April 2016

Firm black cherry on the nose slightly tight the start of the palate has muscle concentrated black cherry the tannins are firm. It fills out in the middle quite fleshy and velvety ripe and rich at the back. Bilberry and bramble on the finish give a fresher feel the finish is perfumed with lingering flavours.

Score: 93/96

Derek Smedley MW, DerekSmedleyMW.co.uk, April 2016

Is this one of the wines of the vintage? It all depends on whether you like the Napa-esque Mouton style, which is every bit as recognisable as that of Lafite (at the other extreme in 2015). This is a big, bold, concentrated wine, with toasty, 100% new oak and plush, compact tannins and succulent fruit flavours. Impressive, but how will it age? We shall see. Drink: 2025-35

Score: 94

Tim Atkin MW, timatkin.com, April 2016
