The Story

Since the 17th Century, the first wine of Château Margaux has been recognised as being one of the greatest wines in the entire world. It owes its unique qualities to the genius of its terroir as well as to the passionate work of a succession of generations. It’s a remarkable wine that comes from a combination of characteristics that are only rarely found: finesse, elegance, complexity, density, intensity, length and freshness. Although its tan...

Vintage 1886

Bordeaux: Harvest began September 25th, again right in the grip of the mildew problem, with added problems of frost early in the season – although the weather improved for harvest. Written Notes

This very old looking, low level bottle  presents with a deep garnet color, displaying its age with wide hints of brick-orange at the rim.

Aromas of dried dark fruits, such as prunes and blackberries, mingle with earthy notes of leather and tobacco. Subtle hints of cedar and spice add complexity to the bouquet, while a delicate floral nuance lingers in the background.

Medium-bodied, the palate reveals flavors of dried berries and plums, complemented by nuances of forest floor and a touch of vanilla. The tannins have still there for my surprise, contributing to a smooth and velvety texture that coats the palate.

The finish is moderate in length, with lingering notes of dried fruit and a hint of dried herbs, leaving a graceful and elegant impression.

In 1886, the year of this vintage, marked significant historical events worldwide. It was the year when Coca-Cola was invented in Atlanta, Georgia, by pharmacist John Pemberton. In Europe, the iconic Statue of Liberty was officially dedicated in New York Harbor, symbolizing freedom and democracy. Meanwhile, in France, the construction of the iconic Eiffel Tower was nearing completion in Paris, signifying a landmark achievement in engineering and architecture.
