Wine Information

Vintage 1943 by Château / This vintage was a tremendous success. It was the best wine produced at Château Margaux, and in Bordeaux generally, since 1934. We think back to those difficult times and conditions during the war with feelings of great sympathy. Many things were lacking : personnel, horses, spray products, generally everything. The success of this vintage is all the more touching. Château Margaux 1943 is very good to drink now. Its b...

Written Notes

The wine presents a rich garnet color with a light brick rim, signaling its age and storied past.

The nose is intensely aromatic, offering a complex bouquet of dried blackcurrant, leather, and tobacco, accented with nuances of forest floor and dried herbs. Subtle hints of violets and anise enrich the overall aromatic depth.

Medium to full-bodied, the palate features a refined blend of mature dark fruit flavors, underscored by notes of cedar and spice. The tannins are well-integrated and smooth, contributing to a velvety mouthfeel, while balanced acidity provides a fresh counterpoint to the wine’s richness.

The finish is long and engaging, with lingering notes of dried fruit and spice, combined with a hint of minerality that adds complexity and persistence.

The 1943 Chateau Margaux showcases the resilience and quality achievable even in challenging wartime conditions. It offers a profound tasting experience with a rich tapestry of mature flavors and aromas, reflective of its historical context.

This vintage was a tremendous success. Its bouquet is very fine, very elegant, closer to the great vintages of the 1950s, like 1953, than the other great wines produced in the 1940s. On the palate, it is tender and harmonious, finishing on a smooth rather than dry note. This delicious wine to drink now can still be kept for several years more without any problem.
