The Story

Since the 17th Century, the first wine of Château Margaux has been recognised as being one of the greatest wines in the entire world. It owes its unique qualities to the genius of its terroir as well as to the passionate work of a succession of generations. It’s a remarkable wine that comes from a combination of characteristics that are only rarely found: finesse, elegance, complexity, density, intensity, length and freshness. Although its tan...

Wine Information

Weather
After a particularly dry and warm start to the year and an early but long, drawn-out flowering, July was dry and hot and August was rainy and very hot, resulting in the threat of disease in the vines. Fortunately, at the beginning of September, hot and very dry weather set in until the end of the harvest. (The picking began on 15th September)

Written Notes

The 1997 Chateau Margaux presents a medium ruby color with hints of garnet towards the edges, indicating its maturity.

The aromatic profile is intricate and evolved, offering a sophisticated blend of ripe red fruits like raspberry and red currant, intertwined with deeper notes of black cherry. These fruit elements are beautifully layered with aromas of dried violets, a hallmark of Margaux, and subtle hints of tobacco, cedar, and leather, contributing to its aged bouquet.

On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and displays a harmonious balance between the residual fruit flavors and secondary characteristics. The red fruit persists but is mellowed, allowing earthier tones of forest floor and slight mushroom to emerge. The tannins are soft and well-integrated, making the wine smooth and approachable, with a refined acidity that maintains freshness.

The finish is moderately long, with lingering notes of fine tobacco and spices from the oak aging, which add a warm complexity to the tail end of the tasting experience.

This vintage is well into its drinking window, offering a delightful complexity that appeals to those who appreciate the subtleties of aged Bordeaux.

Had a flight of 1997 and 1999 vintages for the Christmas dinner. Expected more from 1999 than from 1997 but the result was opposite. 1997 showed good early maturity and great overall balance while 1999 was still to young, firm, and also close and at the same time too malolactic on the nose.
