Weather
After a rainy start to the growing season, August and especially September were hot and dry. September in particular was exceptionally hot, which allowed the grapes to ripen in excellent conditions. (The picking began 20th September)

Vintage 1966

1966 was an exceptional year in Bordeaux for very classic and delicate wines. However, the year started off as anything but promising. The main rainfall that began in late June continued into July, but the hot start to August dried out the soil and the weather gradually improved towards autumn, until it is almost perfect for harvest.

Written Notes

A vintage chosen to celebrate the year our friend arrived in Australia but whatever the reason, a wonderful drink. Great concentration here. Offers a core of sweet fruit. Really was in great nick. Very fine tannins. Serious length. Maturity and complexity in abundance. And yet still with sweet fruit. A wine still very much alive at fifty years and it is hard to ask for much more. Flavours flowed beautifully and the aromas just leapt out of the glass, even after considerable time.
  • 96p

A rich wine with a very fine tannic structure, which has now developed with lots of finesse. It is ready to drink now, but it can be kept longer without any risk.

A typical 66 with dark garnet red colour and brick red hue. The nose is very expressive with spicy character, balmy components, initially slightly dusty the wine develops extremely well displaying hints of prunes and dried fruits, discreet hints of blackberries, mild spices and vanilla. On the palate very elegant with a very fresh character, firm but balanced tannins and an excellent length.
