The Story

The production of a second wine probably goes back to the beginning of the XVII century because it is inseparable from the search for excellence which started at that time. Sold under the name of “Château Margaux 2nd wine”, it took its permanent name of Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux in 1908. After an eclipse between the thirties and the mid-seventies, its production restarted on the arrival of André Mentzelopoulos in 1977 and at first grea...

Vintage 2015

Full report of Bordeaux 2015 by Andrew Caillard MW “Next in line in a great series of vintages; 2000, 2005, 2009, 2010 and 2015.

2015 is a wonderful Bordeaux vintage without the hype or hysteria associated with 2009 and 2010. The wines are generally expressive and generous with wonderful concentration and structure. Given another year in barrel, the wines should gain more complexity and fruit volume. Châteaux, in all sub-regions, are e...

Written Notes

Tasted in April 2016. Represents 23% of total crop and is 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc. Probably one of the very best wines ever produced at the property. Big concentration, intensity, very strong backbone, a lot of of silky fruit and tannin, excellent acidity and stunning finish.

A lot of concentrated raspberries, red cherry came first at the aroma and palate, then turn to darker berries in palate. Fresh, round and silky. A charming second wine. 92-93+

Dark purple colour with almost black core. Very elegant and expressive nose, pure fruit, blackcurrants and blackberries, hints of elderberries and ripe mulberries in the background. Great finesse and persistence on the palate, blackcurrants and mild spices, ripe and silky tannins, excellent length, arguably the best Pavillon Rouge I ever tasted en primeur.

Medium deep colour. Red cherry, dark berry aromas with vanillin notes. Supple red cherry, strawberry, red cherry fruits, sinuous looseknit lacey tannins, underlying mocha oak and persistent chalky plume. Lovely mineral length. 95 points

Pavillon Rouge - 74% Cabernet Sauvignon 21% Merlot 4% Petit Verdot 1 % Cabernet Franc - 60% New oak Fine clear fruit notes, definite elegance, vivid, focussed fresh fruit, the palate is velvety, the tension is impressive on the finish, lovely soft finesse, dusty tannins, it is all subtlety, very good Pavillon Rouge. There has been a shift to improve the quality of Pavillon, production now half of what it was ten years ago. Chateau are convinced that this is the finest ever produced. 91-94/100 2022-2035
