The Story

Since the 17th Century, the first wine of Château Margaux has been recognised as being one of the greatest wines in the entire world. It owes its unique qualities to the genius of its terroir as well as to the passionate work of a succession of generations. It’s a remarkable wine that comes from a combination of characteristics that are only rarely found: finesse, elegance, complexity, density, intensity, length and freshness. Although its tan...

Wine Information

1921 was an especially great year for the wines of Sauternes. For the red wines in general, it was a fine vintage, with elegant and well structured wines, since the harvest was of modest volume. The bottles of Château Margaux can still be surprisingly good. Even though the wine is starting to tire, its great finesse is still perceptible.

Vintage 1921

The weather conditions in Bordeaux during the 1921 growing season were instrumental in shaping the extraordinary character of the vintage. The year began with a mild winter, followed by a warm and dry spring. Summer brought ideal conditions, with consistent sunshine and warm temperatures, allowing the grapes to ripen fully. The harvest took place under clear skies, resulting in grapes of exceptional quality.

Written Notes

Château Margaux 1921 / Necociant-bottling. In good condition with top-shoulder level. Decanted 30 minutes. It exhibited a dark, opaque garnet colour. This beauty continues to reveal the fragrance and elegance that one expects from wines of 1921 vintage. A fragrant, complex bouquet of cedar, herbs, vanillin, tobacco, and coffee is followed by a soft, gentle, well balanced and complex wine with sweet layers of fruit. Very supple with a finely-tuned concentration of fruit and firm but silky tannin, and a long, rich finish. I am not sure how much longer the 1921 Margaux will keep, but from a regular bottle, it is charming and should be drank now.
