The Story

Since the 17th Century, the first wine of Château Margaux has been recognised as being one of the greatest wines in the entire world. It owes its unique qualities to the genius of its terroir as well as to the passionate work of a succession of generations. It’s a remarkable wine that comes from a combination of characteristics that are only rarely found: finesse, elegance, complexity, density, intensity, length and freshness. Although its tan...

Wine Information

At last, a very good vintage ! The only one in the 1930s… Château Margaux 1934 is still superb. It displays a deep, dense colour and a fine, fresh, complex bouquet. On the palate, it is powerful and rich with tannins coming to the fore, but drying a little in the finish. The quality of the bottles is now inconsistent, but most of the magnums are very good.

Vintage 1934

A vintage that is often described as too tannic and harsh, and in many cases this is true. There are however a number of wines that have been very attractive and charming in recent times, I was particularly impressed by Mouton and Latour. It shows that the harsh tannic wines of Bordeaux will often come if one only has the patience to wait.

Written Notes

At last, a very good vintage ! The only one in the 1930s… Château Margaux 1934 is still superb. It displays a deep, dense colour and a fine, fresh, complex bouquet. On the palate, it is powerful and rich with tannins coming to the fore, but drying a little in the finish. The quality of the bottles is now inconsistent, but most of the magnums are very good. It is obviously a wine to drink now, which in the future can only lose the wonderful qualities it has now.

What a beautiful vintage this is! Mid shoulder fill, garnet all over. Floral from start, pure, violets, leather, more intense, prunes, figs, butter and animal fat, this one quite open from the start. Rich mouth-feel and texture, fresh acidity, ripe tannins that are very well mannered, refreshing, elegant, this is more difficult to describe, but pure comes to mind together with enormous complexity and freshness, fantastic length, minutes after minutes.
