The Story

Since the 17th Century, the first wine of Château Margaux has been recognised as being one of the greatest wines in the entire world. It owes its unique qualities to the genius of its terroir as well as to the passionate work of a succession of generations. It’s a remarkable wine that comes from a combination of characteristics that are only rarely found: finesse, elegance, complexity, density, intensity, length and freshness. Although its tan...

Wine Information

How difficult it is to follow a vintage as amazing as 2015! However, Château Margaux 2016 fits well into the continuity of the greatest vintages of the beginning of this century!
The nose is particularly delicate, complex and deep. On the palate, the wine has incredible volume, smoothness and length. Of course, it is our large plots of Cabernet Sauvignon that give this wine all its elegance. They make up 94% of the blend. The Merlots and th...

Vintage 2016

2016 Bordeaux in Review  “A Paradox”

by Andrew Caillard MW

The 2016 Bordeaux vintage will be remembered as one of the great years of the 21st Century. I have not been so excited about the prospects of such young wines since the remarkable back-to-back 2009 and 2010 vintages. At that time China was at the zenith of its extraordinary fine wine ascendency where the very top estates, particularly Chateau Lafite, had become a baksheesh curren...

Written Notes

The 2016 Chateau Margaux displays a rich, deep garnet color, suggesting both maturity and grace. It has a bright, clear edge that catches the light, indicating its refined aging process.

The aroma is complex and deeply enticing. Initial notes of blackcurrant and ripe black cherries dominate, complemented by an elegant floral scent of violets and lilacs. With air, layers of secondary aromas unfold, including anise, licorice, and a delicate hint of sandalwood, all underpinned by a well-integrated oakiness.

The palate is both powerful and poised, showcasing a remarkable structure. The entry is velvety, leading to a dense core of dark fruit flavors, predominantly blackberry, plum, and a touch of red fruit brightness. The mid-palate adds dimensions of spice, mocha, and a subtle, earthy leatheriness, balanced by finely woven tannins that provide a silky yet substantial mouthfeel.

The finish is prolonged and mesmerizing, characterized by a refreshing acidity that elevates the rich fruitiness and floral notes. Traces of graphite and minerality provide a classic Bordeaux closure, leaving a lasting impression of elegance and complexity.

The 2016 Chateau Margaux is a stellar example of what this illustrious estate can produce in an exceptional vintage. It combines strength and sophistication with a potential for further aging, promising to develop greater intricacies over time. This vintage stands out for its exquisite balance, depth, and the pure expression of terroir.

Tasted in November 2021. It represents only 28% of the production. 94% C. Sauvignon, 3% C.Franc, 2% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot. This wine was another classic for the property with mind-boggling purity, sheer elegance, and sophisticated touch. Great midpalate, distinguished and velvety structure. Liquid silk. A tender aftertaste that doesn't want to go away! 98-99p.

The grand vin 2016 Château Margaux is a beauty and tastes like the essence of Margaux. Thrilling notes of blueberries, cassis, crushed violets, flowery incense, and spice notes all give way to a full-bodied 2016 that strikes an incredible balance between richness and elegance. A blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot brought up in new barrels, it’s more focused and elegant than the 2015, yet I suspect it’s just as concentrated, and readers are going have a blast comparing these two magical vintages over the coming 4-5 decades.

The nose is particularly delicate, complex and deep. On the palate, the wine has incredible volume, smoothness and length. Of course, it is our large plots of Cabernet Sauvignon that give this wine all its elegance. They make up 94% of the blend. The Merlots and the Cabernet Francs, with respectively 2% and 3%, bring a great complexity to the wine both with aroma, and with the smoothness of their tannic structure. Finally, the Petit Verdots, despite their small quantity (only 1% of the blend), bring considerable density and volume.
In spite of this vintage's dry and sunny summer conditions, this wine has kept all its acid potential, the beginnings of perfect evolution and preservation. Château Margaux 2016 is an exceptional wine, the result of the combination of amazing weather conditions, the knowledge of our terroir and a great selection effort (28% of the harvest).
(October 2018)

Margaux - A bright, red, fresh vintage, the wine provides lift, energy and a nice pop in the red berries. Silky, elegant, lifted and long, there is a gorgeous purity to the black raspberry, black currant and red berry palate. You are going to need to wait for this beauty to develop, as the wine has a lot of structure and freshness that needs to round out. The wine was made from a blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot. 99 Pts

Ruby. Floral, scented, red berries, anise, blueberries, some violets, nuanced, delicate nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fresh, fruity, dark berries, anise, playful and nuanced, blueberries, spices, long. 96-98

Medium deep crimson colour. Attractive red plum, strawberry, vanilla spice aromas with flowery herb garden notes. Silky textured supple wine with raspberry, strawberry cassis pastille flavours, looseknit lacy textures and mocha vanilla oak notes. Finishes chalky dense and minerally fresh and long. Very good. Tasted at Ch Margaux. 96 points

A very severe selection allowed only 28% of the total harvest to enter the Grand Vin. Dark purple red with violet hue and black core. Very precise nose, slightly closed, with fabulous fruit, blackcurrants, sweet elderberries, hints of blackerries and mulberries in the background. With some oxygen releasing discreet toasting aroma, hints of minerality, gingerbread spices and hints of chocolate. On the palate well structured with very concentrated yet elegant and silky tannins, a very rich and complex wine with dense character, impressing freshness and fabulous length. A future icon wine for Château Margaux. 99
