The Story

Wine Information

Like the 1905, we were not thinking that this vintage while elegant and soft in its youth, would not necessarily stand the test of time. We were once again mistaken. Tasted in 2011, the has retained all its elegance and balance : A nose of complexity and charm followed by soft and alluring finish.

There are few details to be found about 1909, except that it was generally fine weather during the harvest. (The picking began 29th September)

Written Notes

The 1909 Château Margaux comes from a long-forgotten vintage that was ruined by August storms. It predates the Ginestet family’s proprietorship and sports an old Pillet-Will label. Initially it could not disguise the fact that it comes from a difficult growing season. The nose is rather flat, slightly metallic and herbal, whilst the palate feels a little rigid and clearly lacks vigour. Over the course of three hours, it never blossoms into something magical, but it does manifest more red fruit and slightly more delineation. It cannot quite shake off its dourness despite impeccable provenance. The 1909 is a curiosity, but an interesting curiosity and perfectly drinkable.

This wine was light and elegant in its youth, and has not lost any of its qualities today. The nose is deep and complex, the palate elegant and balanced, the finish smooth and delicate.
