The Story

Since the 17th Century, the first wine of Château Margaux has been recognised as being one of the greatest wines in the entire world. It owes its unique qualities to the genius of its terroir as well as to the passionate work of a succession of generations. Vintage 1956

BORDEAUX / Due to the climatic conditions and the breeding of the vines, Bordeaux produced fine and concentrated wines in 1952, 1953 and 1955. 1956 is a historic year, because it marks the beginning of a new era for Bordeaux. The reason for this paradigm shift was the shock caused by a -20°C cold spell in Bordeaux in February 1956 which killed a large swath of vines. Saint-Émilion and Pomerol were the hardest hit. Written Notes

Displays a deep garnet color, tinged with noticeable brown edges indicative of its age and the challenging vintage.

The nose offers a subdued profile, with notes of dried black fruits, leather, and a hint of tobacco. Earthy undertones of forest floor and mushroom are also evident, reflecting the wine's maturity.

Medium-bodied with a somewhat austere structure. The flavors include a blend of dried fruits and earthy notes, complemented by secondary characteristics of spice and old wood. The tannins are fully resolved, contributing to a smooth texture.

FThe finish is moderate, carrying forward the earthy and leathery notes from the palate with a faint reminder of dried herbs.

The 1956 Chateau Margaux is a good exsample of the estate's resilience in facing one of Bordeaux's toughest vintages. While not exhibiting the typical vibrancy and complexity of more favorable years, it offers a unique insight into the historical challenges of winemaking. This vintage is best appreciated 50 years ago, if even then.

We would only experience a terrible winter like 1956 again in 1985, when the temperature dropped almost as low, but at the beginning of January, not in February, as in 1956. The damage to the vegetation was therefore more devastating in 1956. Château Margaux 1956 is obviously not a very good vintage... It is a light wine, with a slightly strange nose; in fact, without much interest.
