The Story

Since the 17th Century, the first wine of Château Margaux has been recognised as being one of the greatest wines in the entire world. It owes its unique qualities to the genius of its terroir as well as to the passionate work of a succession of generations. It’s a remarkable wine that comes from a combination of characteristics that are only rarely found: finesse, elegance, complexity, density, intensity, length and freshness. Although its tan...

Wine Information

The 1924 bumper harvest produced pleasant, harmonious, very fine wines, which proved to have a remarkable capacity for ageing. Today, the wine in bottles has tired, but the magnums have kept some freshness and are very pleasant to drink. It was with this vintage that the First Growths decided for the first time to bottle their whole production at the Château. The poor vintages and economic whirlwind of the 1930s in the end forced them to rever...

Written Notes

A nutty nose that was deep, heavy and rich had an oaky streak to it that I was hoping would blow off. The palate was more oaky, making this not my cup of tea. The oak eventually blew off, and this 1924 Margaux was pretty and fragrant (90).

Brick red colour. Expressive nose with still dark berries, sweet elderberries and blackcurrants, hints of roasted red peppers in the background. Very juicy with complexity and very convincing length.

  • 97p

RIch, toasted coffe nose with blackcurrants, cedar, dark chocolate and spices. Medium-bodied palate is intense and elegant. Vivid acidity is balanced with concentrated fruit and lingering long mineral finish with gravel notes. – JL 96+p. (Aug 2023)

This bumper harvest produced pleasant, harmonious, very fine wines, which proved to have a remarkable capacity for ageing. The poor vintages and economic whirlwind of the 1930s in the end forced them to reverse this decision until better days.

1924 Margaux – I do associate most younger vintages of Ch. Margaux as fairly light and must admit that i´ve been underwhelmed on numerous occasions. However my great experiences with the really old vintages have been astonishing and this wine offered a beautiful texture, still rich and fruity with a plethora of wild berries and a smooth almost creamy sensation, still very clean without oxidation and a truly long, powerful finish.
