The Story

Since the 17th Century, the first wine of Château Margaux has been recognised as being one of the greatest wines in the entire world. It owes its unique qualities to the genius of its terroir as well as to the passionate work of a succession of generations. It’s a remarkable wine that comes from a combination of characteristics that are only rarely found: finesse, elegance, complexity, density, intensity, length and freshness. Although its tan...

Vintage 1988

The first of a trio of great vintages and which was rather overshadowed by the 89s and 90s. Certainly the most "classic" of the trio, with many wines which are not overtly fruit-focused, but which have levels of extract and concentration which make them perfect candidates for prolonged storage.

Written Notes

Lastly, we had the ‘lucky’ 1988 Margaux, which had a benevolently cheesy nose, with some cinnamon stick on the side. There was nice spice, and it mellowed into a morning cereal sweetness, with carob and cinnamon returning. The ’88 still had good intensity, and it had rust and spice and was even a bit too austere for Gil. It was definitely a whips and chains wine, more intense than most memories I have of ’88 clarets. ‘Old furniture varnish’ rounded out its finish with a touch of cedar.

Excellent condition and level by the neck. Deep-dark, bright and warm colour. Fabulous rich nose, open, soft and complex. Very demanding. Good acidity and structure, not as fat and complex as 1989, but a very close match. Admirable length and finish. A lovely and joyful experience.

There is mid freshness balance the tannins integrated discreet but supporting. Depth of the fruit at the back the rich fruit gives way to freshness the finish is remarkably light and elegant.
