Written Notes

The 2004 Chateau Margaux exhibits a medium garnet color with slight bricking at the edges, indicating its maturation and evolution in the bottle.

The bouquet offers a refined complexity with an elegant mix of red and black fruits, primarily notes of cassis, raspberry, and a hint of blackberry. Layered upon these are secondary aromas of dried flowers, particularly violets and a touch of rose, alongside nuances of cigar box, leather, and a whisper of truffle. The subtle influence of oak adds a hint of vanilla and sweet spices.

On the palate, the wine is gracefully matured, presenting a silky texture with resolved tannins that envelope the mouth. The fruit is still vibrant but now shows signs of tertiary development, displaying flavors of dried cherries and fig, complemented by notes of forest floor and mushroom. The acidity is well integrated, providing freshness that balances the wine’s depth.

The finish is long and nuanced, with continuing themes of mature fruit and earthy elements. There is a persistent mineral streak that lends a sense of place, reflecting the gravelly soils of Margaux.

The 2004 Margaux had ‘berry cobbler,’ per Gil, and he hit it on the head again, as usual, twirling his hammer and popping it back in his holster. Sweet, crumbly, nutty and crusty, I couldn’t get past the berry cobbler thing – that summed it up 100%. The richness of the wine was a different league than the Pavillons. A quadrafecta of rich, concentrated coffee, earth, cassis and nut flavors paid off big-time. Long and regal, this was excellent stuff. Paul admired, ‘the scent of Margaux, subtle and extremely refined…combines power and subtlety so harmoniously…soft power.’ The nose became more decadent, with coffee and chocolate emerging.
