The Story

Since the 17th Century, the first wine of Château Margaux has been recognised as being one of the greatest wines in the entire world. It owes its unique qualities to the genius of its terroir as well as to the passionate work of a succession of generations. It’s a remarkable wine that comes from a combination of characteristics that are only rarely found: finesse, elegance, complexity, density, intensity, length and freshness. Although its tan...

Wine Information

2008/ No vintage since 2005 has had glorious weather during the month of August; still, every year, the grapes have ripened (particularly those in the great terroirs), thanks to fine weather in September. But other positive factors might not be obvious: in 2008 the July drought and the nice weather from mid-September onwards probably limited the consequences of the regular and light August showers.

As always it is our drastic selection whic...

Written Notes

We were told that the 2008 Margaux was almost 90% Cabernet. The nose was fine and elegant like the back of a woman’s neck. It had a hint of everything – iron, spice, cedar, cinnamon, musk and purple fruits and flowers. Its aromas were so long in an elegant way, but its palate was rich and expansive. Bipin found ‘the end of mouth amazing.’ Rich and delicious, this was the tastiest of the First Growths that we had sampled on this afternoon, and while it still had backside, it was more reined in and balanced than either of the Rothschilds, aka not as powerful. Someone noted, ‘great length and nice density.’ There was a hint of field green in a great way that someone called ‘fresh mint,’ and Agent Woolls found its ripeness typical of Napa mountain fruit. It certainly was the most drinkable and charming of the Firsts (94).

(87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 1.5% Cabernet Franc, 1.5% Petit Verdot; as a result of drastic selection, the final blend will represent only 31% of the crop at bottling time.) Good deep colour, very fine Cabernet red fruits with aromatic purity, precise and direct with a restrained quality, more violets than blackcurrants, more roses than black cherries, less dense than the Cabernets from Pauillac, fine firm fruit and terrific length show in time, less ripe at this stage than its peers in this vintage, all in finesse and purity. Drink 2018-35.

Consistent notes. I own few bottles of this wine and was curious to see how it fared. It started with great notes of cherries, freshness, seamless structure and great minerality. Not as flamboyant as 2009, but still classy and stylish wine with great personality. Wonderfully balanced and with excellent acidity. After tasting it, I've every reason to jump with joy, having purchased this wine primeur at 1/5 of the price of 2009 vintage or 1/7 of the price of 2010 vintage.

Bright ruby. Seductive nose, floral, scented, refined cassis and some fine leather far behind. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, mouthwatering and stunning texture, refreshing and very long.
