Vintage 1983

Bordeaux / If 1981 was forgotten after 1982, the 1983 was completely eclipsed by 1982, although the harvest was large and of high quality throughout Bordeaux. Too much humidity caused by heavy rains hampered production in many places. At Margaux, some wines were even better than 1982. For example, Château Margaux announced that their 1983 surpassed the 1982. One of the best Palmers of all time was Palmer 1983.

A bottle of 1983 Margaux was in perfect condition, chalky and minerally, fuller-bodied and more stony than any other bottle of this that I have ever had. Its acidity was noticeable and noticeably good, and its spine and length suggested younger rather than older. Its black fruits were almost entrapped by its minerality; this will be a fascinating wine to follow for the next 25 years (95).

 Chateau Margaux is the wine of the vintage. The perfume, with is essence of dried and fresh flowers, cherries, plums, currants, earth, forest leaves and tobacco wrapper is backed up by the wines intensity, purity, length and silky, sensuous textures. No decanting needed. Pop, pour and enjoy this stunner for several more years. Drink from 2023-2040.

Ruby, thin garnet rim. Leaps out of the glass, scented, leather, cedar, cassis, blueberries, figs, layered, seductive and nuanced. Violets, absolutely gorgeous nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity, maturing, still some structure, needs quite a bit of air to open, even after an hour in decanter quite tight and firm. Tobacco, cassis, blueberries, figs, leather, superb length. 98

Amazingly deep crimson. Still very youthful, concentrated, introvert nose. Still needs time! Intense and polished. But still tense. Intense cassis. Long. Amazing persistence. Very pure Cabernet with a slight Margaux lift on the end. Really opened out – though it took its time – into something beautiful. And so much more impressive than the 1982.

Today, the 1983 is certainly one of the most classic Château Margaux of the last twenty years. The bouquet has developed well, it has become rich, complex and mature. On the palate, the impression remains of great power with tannins which are still firm but without any hardness. It is perfect drinking now.

In a certain way 1983 is a benchmark vintage for Château Margaux. Paul Pontalliers first wine shows a garnet red, still lively colour. In the nose fine spices, hints of vanilla, cardamom, cinnamon and discreet fruit. On the palate elegant and well structured with finesse, freshness and great length.

This is a famous wine, and rightly so. I have been lucky enough to taste and drink this wine a number of times and every time it gives enormous pleasure. There is an element of aged complexity but this wine still have everything in abundance but most of all it is the most wonderfully elegant wine. This is the epitomy of fine Red Bordeaux.
