The Story

Since the 17th Century, the first wine of Château Margaux has been recognised as being one of the greatest wines in the entire world. It owes its unique qualities to the genius of its terroir as well as to the passionate work of a succession of generations. It’s a remarkable wine that comes from a combination of characteristics that are only rarely found: finesse, elegance, complexity, density, intensity, length and freshness. Although its tan...

Wine Information

Bordeaux Vintage Report by Château Margaux / 1928 and 1929, what a fabulous pair of vintages! To find successive years of such high quality, we had to wait about sixty years until 1989 and 1990; though, at Margaux, we could also mention 1982 and 1983. The wines made in the 1928 vintage were, right from the start, incredibly powerful and concentrated, often even hard and austere, which explains why 1928 was overshadowed by 1929 which had an alm...

Vintage 1928

The weather conditions in Bordeaux during the 1928 growing season played a pivotal role in shaping the vintage. The year started with a mild winter, followed by a warm and dry spring that allowed for an early budbreak and flowering.

Bordeaux 1928 Reds: The red wines of Bordeaux from the 1928 vintage are notable for their unique character and their representation of a challenging growing season.

Written Notes

We were clearly in red Bordeaux territory with the next wine. It had a deep, rich nose of cassis, chocolate, coffee, bandaid, earth and a touch of garden goodness. There were lots of wild herbs and wild child action in this very old wine. The palate was tangy, rich and spicy with more chocolate and game flavors. It was revealed to be a 1928 Margaux, wow! There was so much power in this ancient warrior, a testament to the vintage. This was rich, sumptuous and saucy. Plush and long, the Margaux also had caramel flavors develop. While spectacular for the first glass and refill, it did start to fade with time, but by that time, there wasn’t much left. When wines are old, enjoy them right away and don’t hesitate (96).

hâteau Margaux 1928 is an outstandingly great wine and is today perhaps superior to the 1929, since it has, on the whole, aged better. There is more consistency in the bottles, the wine has lost its hardness, but has kept an absolutely extraordinary freshness and richness. It may not have the great finesse of a bottle of 1929, but its freshness is far greater. Without going as far as to say that we still have to wait to drink it, we think its potential for ageing is almost in tact. Like 1870 and 1900, this wine seems to have been made for eternity...

Mid shoulder fill, ruby with thin brick rim. Tobacco, cigars, spicy, cedar, compact, licorice, needs a lot of time to open, coffee, caramel, tea, citrus, after two hours some floral notes in the back. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, intense, elegant texture, does not give that much on the palate at first, again after two hours, magnificent fruit, superb balance and exceptional long finish. After four hours, even more elegant fruit, pure violets, even more refreshing in the mouth, better body and texture, a magnificent experience, perfect balance, and it sat in the mouth until the next morning.
