Written Notes

The 2023 Chateau Margaux presents a deep, alluring ruby hue with a vibrant purple edge, suggesting youth and vitality. An intricate bouquet unfurls with an initial burst of ripe blackberries and dark cherries, layered with subtle notes of violets and fresh herbs. As it opens, nuances of fine cedar, graphite, and a hint of sweet tobacco emerge, underpinned by a light, earthy minerality that speaks to its esteemed terroir.

On the palate, the wine is exquisitely balanced with a harmonious blend of power and elegance. The attack is silky and smooth, leading into a well-structured body laden with flavors of plush cassis, plums, and a sprinkle of spice. The mid-palate reveals a complex interplay of leather, dark chocolate, and a persistent, fine-grained tannic backbone.

The finish is long, lingering, and reflective, with a returning echo of floral and fruit notes that slowly taper into a refined expression of oak and earth.

Overall: The 2023 Chateau Margaux is a compelling vintage that beautifully articulates the grace and strength of its prestigious lineage. With its superb balance and depth, it promises excellent aging potential. A wine that will undoubtedly evolve and reveal further complexities over the coming decades.

Tasted in April 2024. This wine is made up of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot and has 13% alcohol. Only 41% of the harvest went into Grand Vin. It is a strong contender to be the wine of the vintage! It is incredibly sophisticated and elegant, displaying grace and finesse, along with fabulous complexity and a well-developed mid-palate. The aftertaste lingers for more than a minute. This wine will surely give the 2022 version a run for its money!

Arômes superbes et complexes, entre notes de fleur, de cèdre. En bouche, on retrouve une minéralité pas si fréquente dans ce cru, un grand corps et une grande
texture. De toute évidence, c’est un classique qui se prépare et il sera de longue garde. 97-98

Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, delicate edge brightening. Fine oak savouriness, delicate hints of nougat and clove, dark forest berries, cassis, liquorice, floral touch, delicate tangerine zest, seductive bouquet. Juicy, highly elegant, ripe heart cherry, silky, supporting tannins, lively, finely structured, a hint of chocolate and blackberry on the finish, harmonious, balanced, mineral-salty, lingers for a very long time. A perfect reflection of this unique terroir.

Cassis, anise, dark fruits, blackberries, spices, fruit forward nose, detailed, layered, scented, nuanced nose.
Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, blackberries, dark fruits, liquorice, detailed, layered, nuanced, deep, long finish. After a few vintages with a rather bold expression for Margaux, this is more recognisably seductive.  97-99

Deep purple colour with violet hue. Expressive nose with ripe dark berries, blackcurrants and blackberries, elegant floral hints in the background. Fine oak with discreet toasting, mild spices in the background. On the palate well balanced with ripe and silky tannins, refined fruit, great freshness and purity with a persistent finish. The quintessence of elegance, a true tribute to Paul Pontallier.

The aromas in this young Margaux are so primary, reminding me of grape must fermenting in the vat, then turning to perfumes and flowers. Violets and roses. Full-bodied but it comes across as so agile and bright, with vivid acidity that makes the wine crunchy and linear. As Alexis, one of the owners of Margaux said, this really shows the DNA of the estate. Weightless. One of the wines of the vintage. 3.6 pH. Blend of 89% cabernet sauvignon, 5% merlot, 4% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot. 99-100
