The Story

Well-cared for vines, strictly controlled yields and as late as possible harvest produces an aromatic and opulent wine. Deeply coloured, La Tâche develops a palate of extraordinary aromas of dark fruits, truffle and spices.

Rich and concentrated, its bouquet releases infinite tones that melt in the mouth to form a lovely ensemble – always exceptional, even in the difficult vintages. Hence in 1950 and 1951, it was the only wine in the domain...

Vintage 1959

Burgundy: A record crop of magnificent wines, legendary and still very good. Full but soft-textured.  After a number of difficult vintages and small crops, finally a great vintage arrived with the rare combination of sufficient quantity and high quality.

An ideal spring flowering was followed by hot and dry weather in July and August. Showers refreshed the vines and on 14 September the harvest commenced under clear skies.

Written Notes

The 1959 Burgundy vintage is considered one of the great post-war years for top Côte de Nuits producers. Ideal weather—a good spring flowering followed by a hot, dry July and August with helpful showers ahead of harvest—enabled excellent ripeness with richness and balance. In La Tâche 1959, these conditions combined with careful vineyard work to produce a wine that remains remarkable even in maturity, showing depth, concentration and a layered aromatic profile that still thrills decades later.

Appearance: Mature garnet with warm amber edges; deep colour that reflects both age and structured fruit presence.

Nose: Deep, complex and evocative. Aromas of rich dark fruits—black plum reduction, blackberry compote—are layered with tertiary signatures of truffle, forest floor, leather, spice and cedar, along with subtle floral hints and savory earth. The bouquet unfolds slowly in the glass, revealing nuance and great aromatic persistence.

Palate: Medium-to-full bodied with a refined yet concentrated core. Mature dark fruit flavors are balanced by soft, integrated acidity and supple, evolved tannins. Notes of dried berry, tobacco leaf, earth and savory spice meld with a nuanced mineral thread, giving structure without weight. There’s a sense of both depth and harmony in the mouth, a testament to the vintage’s quality and the site’s pedigree.

Finish: Long, resonant and elegantly mature, carrying lingering dark fruit, spice, truffle and earth into a gentle close

Overall: A superbly mature La Tâche that marries complexity, structural harmony and old-world depth—rich yet refined, and richly layered with tertiary nuance that highlights both the vintage and DRC’s mastery.

Serving & Pairing: Serve at 16–18 °C with gentle decanting (30–60 min) to coax open the mature aromatics. Pair with braised lamb, roasted game, truffle dishes or aged hard cheeses that complement the wine’s earthy complexity.

Drinking Window: Now–2030+

The 1959 DRC La Tache was flat-out awesome, heads and shoulders better than the others so far.  It was a perfect bottle, dripping with rose and its oil.  JB admired its ‘juicy’ quality.  It was also saucy, full of juicy red tomatoes to go with its juicy red fruits.  ‘So good,’ appeared over and over again in my notes, and a touch of benevolent cereal.  This was a La Tache firing on all cylinders (99).
