99 points Decanter

A vintage made for Richebourg', according to Aubert. Sumptuous and soaring, it is certainly already firing on all cylinders, beginning with the magnificent nose of violets and voluptuous red fruits. The palate is resplendently dramatic, with a fanfare of sweet raspberry coulis, dark cherry, bilberry and graphite. Plush, rippling tannins and gorgeous freshness provide the structure that frames this imperious monopole. It ...

The Story

Richebourg is a king of a wine: the colonnade of the Louvre, the Château of Versailles. You are impressed by its finesse, its length and its delicate sensations, endlessly changing. The fact that no element dominates the others enables you to appreciate all of its aromas, on the nose and on the palate. In any given vintage, Richebourg is always one of the last wines to be drunk. Not because it is too aggressive when young; simply because it ne...

2015 Harvest report - The vineyards celebrate their inscription to the Unesco World Heritage list.

This harvest does not resemble any other one: the berries are small and compact with no sign of millerandage and their skins are tight and full of anthocyanins and ripe tannins. There is average quantity and the early and ultra-fast flowering ensured an exceptionally homogeneous and complete maturity, without ever reaching over-maturity.

Vintage 2015

The 2015 Harvest by Clive Coates MW

The bad news is Chablis. In the early hours of Tuesday 1st September a severe storm hit the Chablis area. From Irancy up to the grands crus of Blanchots and Les Clos a swathe of hail – some hailstones as large as golf balls – has affected some 100 hectares of the vineyard. In all 97 mm of rain fell in six hours. The weather then cleared, threatening rot, and most growers rushed out to harvest before it wa...

Written Notes

Healthy dark red. Very ripe, highly complex aromas and flavors of raspberry, smoky soil tones, dried flowers and musky mocha and coffee. At once utterly seamless and youthfully imploded in the middle palate, this wine initially impressed for its energy and thrust, then gained in pliancy and sweetness with time in the glass. Still, this is a more masculine style than the RSV, finishing backward and penetrating, with its powerful tannins currently cutting off the fruit. A bit uncompromising in the early going but has the stuffing to give it great potential for a glorious and extended evolution in bottle.

Subtle wood spice, violet, lavender, cassis, plum, tea and warm earth aromas combine to introduce incredibly rich, full-bodied, gorgeously complex and mouth coating flavors that possess near-perfect balance on the overtly powerful, sappy and explosively persistent mineral-driven finish. This is very firmly structured yet two important aspects render this entirely civilized: 1) the tannins are unusually fine-grained, and 2) there is so much dry extract present on the mid-palate that the backend does not possess its usual level of youthful austerity. Like the Romanée St. Vivant, this is textbook Riche built to last for decades.

  • 97p

Very rich and round and opulent on the nose – Richebourg indeed! Almost wild and off the charts. Nothing restrained about this. Exuberant and sweet. Very forward on the nose but with enormous concentration under the fruit and marked very ripe tannins. Very much for the future. Aubert de Villaine describes it like a precious stone surrounded by its rocky casing [embedded gemstone]. ‘If you leave a glass for 15 days it won’t change because there is so much tannin', according to Aubert.
