Written Notes

The 1937 Romanée-Conti comes from a remarkable pre-war vintage widely regarded as one of the most successful early expressions of this hallowed Grand Cru. Bottlings from this era were made from ungrafted, very old vines and are celebrated for their richness, structure and age-worthy balance. The 1937 vintage has earned enduring acclaim in vertical tastings, consistently showing supreme class and understated style even decades later, with harmonized fruit, ripe tannins and elegant evolution. These wines have been noted to continue drinking well for many decades after release, a testament to their quality and longevity.

Appearance: Mature garnet-amber with a warm, autumnal tone and deep, aged core—rich colour but softened around the rim, reflecting advanced evolution and bottle age

Nose: Deeply complex and evocative. Aromatics unfold with evolved dark fruit reduction (dried plum, blackberry compote), intertwined with forest floor, truffle earth, leather, cedar spice and tobacco. Secondary notes of dried herbs, exotic spice, and subtle rose petal weave through time-worn tertiary character, giving a sense of nuance and depth that only long aging can bring.

Palate: Medium-to-full bodied with a velvety yet structured mouthfeel. Mature flavours of blackberry, plum reduction and savory spice are supported by integrated acidity and soft, finely resolved tannins. Layers of leather, sous-bois, cedar and earth glide across the mid-palate, balanced by a gentle mineral thread that gives tension without weight.

Finish: Long, graceful, and reflective, with persistent echoes of dark fruit reduction, dried spice, truffle and aged cedar—a finish that speaks more of layered evolution than primary fruit.

Overall: A fully mature masterpiece from Romanée-Conti’s storied history, combining complexity and textural harmony developed over nearly a century. It is rich with tertiary nuance yet balanced, showing the senior depth and elegance that make historic DRC vintages so treasured.

Serving & Pairing: Serve ~16–18 °C; gentle decant (20–40 min) to coax open the aromatics. Pair with roast game, braised lamb shank, truffle-accented dishes or aged hard cheeses that complement mature umami richness.

Drinking Window: Now–2030+

Had an incredible nose that almost took the Ponsot up a notch, but in reality there was nowhere to go from the Ponsot anyway. Everything was there in the ’37 – everything! Rose, garden, mint, perfume, jasmine, Asia, Europe, Africa – a world of spice, if you will, graced its spectacular aromatic profile, as did a touch of steak sauce. The wine just kept unfolding, and its palate also had everything, including menthol, mint, citrus, anise and wax. It was as good as this wine can be

Inside Information

One of the greatest of all burgundies. The most completely successful of the pre-war vintages and long lasting. The vines at this period were old and ungrafted. I have been privileged to taste and drink this wine on just four occasions, last in 1988. Its magnificence defies description : it blossoms in the glass, its richness, extract and tannin preserving it perfectly. MB
