The Story

Romanée-Conti lies on brown limestone soils 60 cm deep with a major clay component. Romanée-Saint-Vivant has similar but deeper (90 cm) soils. Higher up, La Romanée occupies a markedly sloping site (12%) and the soil texture is less clayey. La Tâche and La Grande Rue share brown limestone soils, rather shallow at the top end with deeper rendzinas lower down. The same is true for the Richebourg, depending on slope and aspect. The underlying roc...

2006 Harvest

A vigneron's challenge again !

At the time of this writing, the vineyards, relieved of their fruit, have begun to change colour. The soft October sun is caressing the red and gold hills. The villages are quiet again after the hubbub of the harvest. The streets are filled with generous fragrances coming from the wineries where fermentations are proceeding. The birth of this new vintage is a real pleasure to the senses !

2006 VINTAGE in Burgundy

The personality of Burgundy wines makes the difference

A charmer. Such is the epithet most frequently employed when Burgundy's newest vintage is evoked. Nearly two months after the grape harvest, and following a year typified by rather fantastical weather, Burgundy is finally catching its breath. The 2006 vintage, a preoccupying one which never allowed an idle moment, both in the vineyards and in the cellars, exc...

Written Notes

Medium-intense, ruby colour. Very spicy red fruit nose with clove, cinnamon and vanilla aromas. Very firm palate shows crisp acidity, powdery tannic structure and delicate red fruit character. Yet sophisticated palate shows austerity. The finish is closed and a bit harsh with tobacco tones.

This wine is quite expressive and unmistakable in its pedigree. At this youthful stage it gives intense black cherry and baking spice aromas with nuances of moss covered bark and iron ore. Rich, concentrated and very tight-knit, the medium bodied palate lend crisp acid and firm grainy tannins. The finish is very long.

2006 ROMANÈE-SAINT-VIVANT GRAND CRU A bit closed nose at first with floral notes on a backdrop of pretty red berry fruit. After a thirty minutes the nose opens up and reveals ample fruit which is backed up by lots of Asian spice and a core of earthy notes as well as delicious oak and a touch of vegetable greenness that just ads to the complexity. A very compelling nose. Very refined and focused palate with bright, sweet dark red fruit that brims with Asian spice and earthy notes. Seamless from start to finish with fine grained tannins and bright acidity that lifts the finish which indicates good aging potential. Very refined and elegant though the nose is more open than the palate at this stage and I would give this wine serious aging before drinking. Drink 2018-2028 94p.
