98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 1978 Romanée Conti Grand Cru is a wine that I thought I would never taste. This bottle was served at a private dinner in Beaune with Bertrand de Villaine present. The bottom line is -- it delivered. With a thin tawny rim it shows its age, but the bouquet is truly transcendental, a mixture of red and black fruit such as wild strawberries and raspberry, and a hint of pomegranate all beautifully defi...

The Story

“As if, in this square of earth, the gods had bequeathed us a memory of the fascinating vestige of a timeless perfection.” — Richard Olney. The wine of Prince de Conti, she is velvet, seduction and mystery. It is the most Proustian of all great wines.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is without question the most famous estate in Burgundy and arguably the greatest, producing some of the best wines in the world. It is probably one of the mos...

Written Notes

The 1978 DRC Romanee Conti was similar yet smoother. It was a softer and easier wine, delicious of course. I can’t remember who ‘HJ’ was, but he said, ‘Now that’s a spicy meatball’ (95).

Extraordinary cold and wet spring continued until drastic weather change took place in the beginning of August. The weather changed favourably and grapes ripened ideally, although very late. The result was a very limited crop with very high concentration in grapes. Truly one of the greatest vintages of the century. The Romanée-Conti was yielding only 14 hl/ha and 6 535 bottles were made. Clear, beautiful, cherry red colour with moderate intensity. Immensely complex and wonderfully evolved nose – full of ripe cherries, leather, hints of violets, earthiness, and spices. On the palate the wine shares enormous texture! Silky medium-bodied taste with extremely refined elegant tannins and delightfully fresh acidity. Every drop in the mouth reflects extraordinary concentration of red fruits, spices, minerals, and floral flavours. The wine seems not to finish ever in the lingering aftertaste.

Deep deep ruby with a tawny rim. Very healthy colour. Sweet violets and a hint of mushrooms. Fantastically intriguing – herbs and alpine meadows. Crystal clear and jewel cut. Lighter on the palate than expected with more acid. Quite delicate. Great opening out at the end of the palate. Very very slightly dry though lovely peacock's-tail fruit on the finish. A great vintage from a great vineyard. Not a bad grower either...

The 1978 Romanée Conti Grand Cru is a wine that I thought I would never taste. This bottle was served at a private dinner in Beaune with Bertrand de Villaine present. The bottom line is -- it delivered. With a thin tawny rim it shows its age, but the bouquet is truly transcendental, a mixture of red and black fruit such as wild strawberries and raspberry, and a hint of pomegranate all beautifully defined. With aeration it begins to offer more secondary aromas, such as brown sugar and a scent of a Tuscan delicatessen. The palate lives up to expectations with very fine tannins, fresh and tensile with a veneer of shimmering dark plum and raspberry fruit that soon gives way to more meaty notes, almost ferrous towards the finish. It has almost unbearable finesse. Is it a perfect wine? Almost. As much as I could, I drank this, as it is just a sublime and evocative Pinot Noir.
