The Story

Romanée-Conti lies on brown limestone soils 60 cm deep with a major clay component. Romanée-Saint-Vivant has similar but deeper (90 cm) soils. Higher up, La Romanée occupies a markedly sloping site (12%) and the soil texture is less clayey. La Tâche and La Grande Rue share brown limestone soils, rather shallow at the top end with deeper rendzinas lower down. The same is true for the Richebourg, depending on slope and aspect. The underlying roc...

Vintage 2017

BURGUNDY 2017 - In 2017, everything came good for the Bourgogne winegrowing region in terms of both quality and quantity. And after several years of harvests that suffered the whims of the weather, 2017 has provided volumes set to satisfy the market, with wines that are already promising great things to come from this elegant vintage.

Written Notes

On the nose there’s an undercurrent of dark, spiced fruit, then the palate explodes with smokey intensity, dark and intense, tightly-wound, releasing a very decent wash of juice, the acidity is soft here, different to its neighbours’, the tannins correspondingly tighter and more insistent. Fresh, delicate, fine-boned.

A total stunner, the 2017 Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru is the most expressive wine in the lineup today. Rich, creamy and so wonderfully textured, the RSV simply has it all. The tannins are present, but they are also matched by tremendous fruit density and pure power. Floral and savory overtones grace the lifted, saline finish. Leaving price aside, if I could only have one wine in this range, it would unquestionably be the RSV. The 2017 is a total knock-out. That’s all there is to it. This fruit was picked on September 10 and 11.

Pale garnet. Very wild and aromatic. Lively and fresh. Even more transparent than the Richebourg. Racy and actually in a blind tasting this might be easy to miss as it doesn’t have the obvious concentration one associates with the Domaine. Very C21! Very dry, even a little hard on the end. I’m sure it will be fabulous but it’s not as showy as some today. 1,693 cases
