The Story

Well-cared for vines, strictly controlled yields and as late as possible harvest produces an aromatic and opulent wine. Deeply coloured, La Tâche develops a palate of extraordinary aromas of dark fruits, truffle and spices.

Rich and concentrated, its bouquet releases infinite tones that melt in the mouth to form a lovely ensemble – always exceptional, even in the difficult vintages. Hence in 1950 and 1951, it was the only wine in the domain...

2001 Harvest

At the time of this writing, the vineyards resemble a purplish red and gold tapestry under the sun that is shining through a light autumnal mist. The picture is sumptuous. At last we can feel the calm and softness of the "Indian Summer" which has set in over Burgundy.

This calm and this softness strikingly contrast with the chaotic year we went through : successively rainy, cold, warm, often without any transition, every wa...

2001 VINTAGE in Burgundy

A promising start to the new millennium...

Growing season and weather conditions

The winter, during which the vines lay dormant, was a mild one.

The first signs of bud-burst came early but wintry conditions in April accompanied by frosts in the most exposed vineyards slowed down the start of the growing season.

Spring, from May onwards, was marked by periods of fine sunny weather.

The first flowers...

Written Notes

Big Ed set the LT’s in motion with a 2001 DRC La Tache. He thought it might be too young, but I didn’t find that the case 100%. There were great and complicated aromas of musk, animal, forest, black fruit, tar and minerals. Its palate was rich, buttery and smooth, although a touch softer than I expected. Admittedly, we had a super spicy dish with the whites, and my palate needed some time to recover, so that might have been some of the story. (95).

“Strikingly extravagant nose of rose petals, oriental spic- es, pungent tea and leather notes plus ultra elegant pinot fruit. The powerful, chiseled, pure flavors are remarkably detailed, precise and fine with mind bending complexity yet for all the emotional drama of this wine, it remains understated and almost aloof at the moment. The finish is dense, structured and quite firm though there is nary a hard edge to be found and while this too cannot rival the other worldly 1999, 2001 will one day be thought of as a genuinely excellent vintage for La Tâche. In short, aristocratic in every sense.”(96pts BH)

Medium red. Knockout perfume of raspberry, minerals and truffley underbrush accented by licorice and pepper notes. Wonderfully silky yet energetic, with vibrant raspberry and Asian spice flavors complicated by sexy earth tones and a truffley sweetness. An element of saline minerality builds in the middle palate, with notes of pepper and herbs contributing thrust. Really stains the palate on the refined back end. Just approaching what is likely to be an extended plane of peak drinkability.

A touch of brick on the rim. The nose is quite subdued for La Tache, a hint of melted tar on a hot summer’s day, wild hedgerow, almost Musigny-like in persona. The palate is similarly very closed, perhaps in an adolescent stage similar to the La Tache 1996 tasted alongside. But its velvety tannins are discernable, the finely poised balance and vibrant acidity. Hints of black plum and dried herbs towards the finish that has a touch of stalkiness that for me just adds complexity

Full, rich, concentrated nose. Lots of depth. Even more concentration, dimension and volume than the Richebourg. Really rich. Very lovely, classy, pure Pinot. Excellent.
