The Richebourg 2016 is showing gorgeously – so vibrant, pure and energetic – with a sensual touch rarely seen from a Richebourg. The bouquet is offering layers of cool energetic fruit – an explosion of detailed forest berries, Vosne spices – effortless, detailed and delicate. On the palate very fine intensity without feeling powerful or dense – it’s just caressing you palate with multiple layers of cool and juicy fruit – infused with a detaile...

The Story

Richebourg is a king of a wine: the colonnade of the Louvre, the Château of Versailles. You are impressed by its finesse, its length and its delicate sensations, endlessly changing. The fact that no element dominates the others enables you to appreciate all of its aromas, on the nose and on the palate. In any given vintage, Richebourg is always one of the last wines to be drunk. Not because it is too aggressive when young; simply because it ne...

2016 RED BURGUNDY VINTAGE REPORT

The 2016 harvest was, of course, later for Pinot Noir in the Côtes de Nuits, and some climats had different productions depending on how they weathered the frost of April 26th. In this report I will talk about each of the producers’ allocations to illustrate the variations between the totals from the 2015 and 2016 vintages. I will also seek to give you an idea of the style of the 2016 red wines versus those ...

Written Notes

Richebourg DRC 2016 was an intermezzo. It wasn’t planned at all to taste this wine. One of the participants in the tasting meant we should taste it and calibrate and refresh our taste buds. All I can write about this wine is  - an incredibly concentrated and sophisticated juice! An awful lot of wild strawberries and almonds in this wine! 99-100p.

(24 hectoliters per hectare): Dark red-ruby color. Medicinal black cherry, blackberry, violet, lavender, sandalwood and crushed rock on the nose. Then wonderfully silky and spherical in the mouth but firm as well, conveying a distinctly suave impression for all its concentration. Flavors of dark fruits, coffee, flowers and spices saturate the entire palate. In its texture and length, this sample reminded me a bit of the 2015 version--and it's more elegant and less chewy and rough than the 2016 Echézeaux or Grands-Echézeaux.

An exuberantly fresh if restrained nose offers up a panoply of spice elements that add breadth to the mostly dark berry fruit and plum aromas that are laced with smoky hints of violet, rose petal, lavender and a whisper of sandalwood. The tautly muscular broad-shouldered flavors possess outstanding mid-palate density as well as evident minerality on the focused, impeccably well-balanced and hugely persistent finale that just goes and goes. The '16 Riche is a bit more refined than usual thanks to the beautifully fine-grained tannins and a wine that could aptly be described as a lovely combination of power and refinement that should also successfully age for a very long time.

The 2016 Richebourg Grand Cru was picked on September 23–24 at 24hL/ha. It is much more intellectual and, you might argue, more challenging on the nose. Initially it feels a little green, not through underripeness but due to a stemmy element that is not quite as well enmeshed with the fruit. This seems to dissipate with time, and after two or three minutes it evolves an extraordinarily complex mélange of red and black fruit (more the latter), briar, rose petals, crushed stone and just a touch of seaweed. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannin, not as silky as the Romanée-Saint-Vivant, and a little more angular and masculine by comparison. This is one of the most saline Richebourgs that I have encountered from the domaine. Clearly a wine that is going to require a decade in bottle to really find its groove. Compelling, but not the most straightforward Richebourg in the pack. Then again, don’t we all like a puzzle? 868 cases produced. Tasted at Corney & Barrow’s annual in-bottle tasting in London.

Such a friendly nose – almost floral ripe Pinot fruit. So energetic and full of bumptious life! A real star. Beautiful healthy juice with a magnificent undertow. Great constitution. So clean and pure. Soars out of the glass. And continues to throb on the palate long after expectoration.

Inside Information

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Broader-shouldered and ampler than the Romanée-St-Vivant, the 2016 Richebourg Grand Cru unfurls in the glass with a lavish bouquet of cassis, dark plums, candied peel, potpourri, Asian spices, peonies and smoked duck. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, rich and expansive, with considerable depth and dimension at the core, and a gourmand, almost fleshy profile that marries beautifully with its cool, precise fruit tones and its velvety structuring tannins. This is a superb Richerbourg that to my palate surpasses the 2015 rendition
