The Story

“As if, in this square of earth, the gods had bequeathed us a memory of the fascinating vestige of a timeless perfection.” — Richard Olney. The wine of Prince de Conti, she is velvet, seduction and mystery. It is the most Proustian of all great wines.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is without question the most famous estate in Burgundy and arguably the greatest, producing some of the best wines in the world. It is probably one of the mos...

2008 Harvest

The weather sometimes makes it as hard and complicated to give birth to a new vintage as it must be to decipher Egyptian hieroglyphs. 2008 will remain a concentrated demonstration of how difficult, fascinating and also rewarding it is to be a vigneron in Burgundy.

We first became aware of these difficulties on Palm Sunday when a firm West wind blew for the whole week-end. The wind that blows on that day remains, practically ...

Vintage 2008

An indifferent spring caused uneven flowering and mildew risk. At the end of June the weather changed for the better, continuing into July. Apart from local hail in the Côte de Beaune at the end of July, the summer began well. August arrived fairly cold and variable, but fortunately the last week of the month brought fine, warm weather. The lead-up to harvest saw sunny skies, apart from two days of rain in mid-September. A challenging vintage...

Written Notes

The 2008 immediately signaled the next step of maturity.  There was a lot of good herbaceousness to go with a cedary and lemony personality, and plenty of wild herbs in this rusty RC, along with a bit of sweaty pheromones…these are all compliments!  There was great richness to the palate with plenty of red fruits and a touch of tomato goodness.  Its finish was more mellow than I expected, but it still had some vim and skip.  I loved its emerging tomato flavors. There was a delicacy and spice with an Asian glaze to its flavors, and a nice oily edge.  Great spice and rust appeared again in my notes, as did leathery finish.  JS also noted a little greenness, and Hollywood Jef it’s ‘peppery finish.’ (96pts)

Delivers beautiful perfumed aromas of rose, sandalwood and spice. All silk, class and finesse, this red is concentrated yet detailed and just keeps unfolding with incredible length and sweetness.

DRC Romanée Conti 2008 / Good medium red, but hazy from the recent racking. The nose shows darker aromas than La T a che: berries, violet, Oriental spices. At once spherical and penetrating, with a silkiness that bathes the palate in berry, pepper, spice and mineral flavors. Comes across as fatter than La T a che today, with a stronger early impression of sweetness. Boasts a three-dimensional texture and uncanny depth, but this is sure to shut down in the bottle. Perhaps most impressive now on the back end, which features great rising length and grip.

  • 97p

"This is the most backward wine in the range at present with extremely reticent aromas of ultra elegant and refined red berry fruit, spice and floral notes plus earth and underbrush hints that complement perfectly the detailed, intense and palate etching middle weight flavors that for all the reserve of the nose, explode into a gorgeously pure and driving finish of truly stunning length that seems to have boundless energy. The underlying sense of proportion and perfect balance very much confers a Zen-like character to the '08 Romanée-Conti. A potentially great vintage for this most storied of wines but plenty of patience will be required."

Pale pinky cherry red, pretty light at the rim. Bewitchingly sweet yet fresh red fruit – intensely aromatic and inviting. Such richness and depth without the slightest heaviness. Tongue-tingling fruit; lively, fresh and generous. Spicy on the back palate but the spice is enveloped by the fruit. But this is no fruit bomb – tannins are taut and upright, almost hidden but giving shape to the fruit. Long, clear, ringing finish.
