The Story

The Montrachet family consists of grand five Grands Crus grown in the two villages of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. These two share the Montrachet and Bâtard-Montrachet appellations. Vintage 1988

1988 VINTAGE in Burgundy / 1988 has been a good vintage in Burgundy, with enough quantity to offset the revived demand of our foreign and home customers.

Written Notes

The 1989 DRC Montrachet was a big (DQ), and I can’t remember why, but we quickly moved on to the 1988 DRC Montrachet, which was delicious in the same vein as the ’04 and ’08 with its sweet tropical fruit.  There was a creamy, sexy honeyed quality here.  This was a buttery, delicious white.  There was a spring floral edge with excellent sweetness and white sugar cube action.  This was more in the ready to go camp but still outstanding (96).

The 1988 Montrachet is incredibly bright and focused today, with a Riesling-like sense of deep minerality and nuance. Mint, white pepper, petrol, crushed rocks and white orchard fruits abound. This bottle, sourced from the domaine, is energetic, tense and tightly wound, much more so than I have seen in previous bottles. Today, the 1988 comes across as almost too young and in need of more time in bottle to flesh out and show the full breadth of its personality!

Montrachet DRC 1988 – colour very forward, almost orange, nose also on that side, for me a touch too much of oxydation, although you might like this botryitis style, for me, I prefer by far the minerality of the Montrachet 2014….
