2000 Harvest

It is once again a year with "ups and downs" and difficult climatic conditions, even abnormal sometimes, that the vignerons and their vineyards had to face :

- A mild end of winter ; a beautiful and early bunch setting.
- A summery June, very like August, resulting in a rapid and complete flowering, without coulure. The harvest promised to be large, especially in the younger vines (the old vines - which represent the great...

Written Notes

The 2000 Burgundy vintage was regarded as very good to excellent, especially for top Côte de Nuits sites like Romanée-Conti. Grapes benefited from favourable weather conditions that allowed full phenolic ripeness and good structure, producing wines with expressive fruit, balanced acidity and strong aging potential. The growing season had its challenges, but meticulous vineyard work and the outstanding terroir at DRC helped the wines achieve complexity and harmony. In historic tastings of the vintage, Romanée-Conti 2000 continues to show impressive poise, fragrance and depth two decades on.

Appearance: Mature but still vibrant ruby with subtle garnet hints at the rim; a youthful core suggests structural strength even after years in bottle.

Nose: Deep and perfumed, with layered aromatics of ripe wild cherry, raspberry and plum, intertwined with floral nuances—rose petal, violet—and subtle exotic spice. With air, complex tertiary notes of sous-bois, forest floor, leather and gentle sandalwood emerge, giving breadth and finesse without overshadowing the fruit purity.

Palate: Medium-to-full bodied with concentrated red fruit framed by fine, silky tannins and lively yet integrated acidity. The core displays dark cherry, wild strawberry and plum, complemented by nuanced spice, light cedar and mineral hints. Despite maturity, there remains excellent tension and drive, with a measured build toward a refined, layered finish.

Finish: Long, elegant and harmonious, with lingering red fruit, floral spice, subtle earth and a touch of saline minerality. Lovely length and balance make the finish both appealing now and suggest further evolution with careful cellaring.

Overall: A beautifully mature expression of Romanée-Conti from a classic millennium vintage—rich yet refined, with expressive aromatics, structural finesse and excellent persistence. This is Romanée-Conti showing both youthfulness in the core and the complexity of long age

Serving: 14–16 °C; gentle decant (60–90 min) to broaden aromatics.

Pairing: Roast duck with berry jus, herb-crusted lamb, game birds, truffle dishes or aged Comté.

Drinking window: Now–2035+

The nose on the 2000 was singing like Christmas with its spice and aromatics.  There were red fruits and a bit of purple here, and a round and long nose intrigued.  The 2000 continues to resonate as a connoisseurs’ vintage, and this was a great example.  This was full-bodied with great minerality and spice - super special!  Everything was in the right place at the right time, and food brought its greatness out even more.  Hailed as ‘the surprise wine of the tasting,’ I already knew better 😉 (97pts)

“Brooding, backward and quite a bit more reserved and less expressive with subtly spicy black fruit aromas trimmed by a subtly spicy black fruit aromas trimmed by a subtle hint of oak and followed by restrained, pure, gor- geously sappy and harmonious, completely seductive fla-vors that offer the best delineation of any of these wines. This is extraordinarily fine and detailed with length that lasts and lasts. Though this will undoubtedly add weight and complexity, it will likely always be understated and refined rather than powerful. This is a simply sublimecombination of spice, silk and velvet delivered in a per- fect sphere of impeccable balance. Incredible by any standard but especially so far the vintage.”(95pts BH)

Medium red. Highly complex aromas of liqueur-like strawberry, violet, mint, truffle and underbrush. Rich, deep, silky and sweet, with an utterly suave, spherical texture; boasts outstanding nuance and volume. From fruit harvested "on the edge of surmaturite," notes Villaine, adding that the subtle green note typically shown by this grand cru takes several years to develop in the bottle. Finishes very long and ripely tannic. Should age very slowly for a 2000."
