The Story

Well-cared for vines, strictly controlled yields and as late as possible harvest produces an aromatic and opulent wine. Deeply coloured, La Tâche develops a palate of extraordinary aromas of dark fruits, truffle and spices.

Rich and concentrated, its bouquet releases infinite tones that melt in the mouth to form a lovely ensemble – always exceptional, even in the difficult vintages. Hence in 1950 and 1951, it was the only wine in the domain...

Vintage 2020

In Burgundy, the harvest is over for most farmers. It has been a year with a lot of heat both in July and August. A huge problem this year has been leaf-thinning and canopy management. Those who have not paid enough attention to the leaf-thinning experienced problems with sunburned grapes.

In Cote d’Or, it is especially the heat that has been tricky this season. First and foremost, some grapes have been burned by the sun resulting in raisin...

Written Notes

The 2020 Burgundy vintage achieved exceptional results at the very best estates despite hot, dry summer conditions that required careful canopy and ripeness management. At DRC, the 2020 wines are broadly considered among the finest of the modern era — combining intensity, structure, purity and depth with the pedigree of a legendary terroir. La Tâche 2020 in particular has been widely praised by major critics for both its powerful presence and long-term potential, with multiple near-perfect scores emerging in professional reviews.

Appearance: Deep ruby-purple with youthful saturation and a bright core — a visual hallmark of richness and depth.

Nose: Intensely aromatic and complex. Layers of red and dark fruit (mulberries, cherries, cassis) mingle with floral notes of violet and peony, bergamot citrus, exotic spice, black tea and licorice. There’s an underlying hint of mineral and savory nuance that adds terroir complexity.

Palate: Medium-to-full bodied with remarkable structure and seamless integration. Concentrated fruit — dark cherry, plum and wild raspberry — is framed by ultra-fine, filigree tannins and vibrant acidity. The palate offers both muscular breadth and refined texture, with spice, sandalwood, earth and mineral threads giving layered complexity and drive.

Finish: Long, harmonious and persistent, with lingering red fruit, floral lift, exotic spice and a cool mineral echo that carries well past the close — balanced between richness and finesse.

Overall: A magnificent La Tâche, combining expressive aromatics, structural precision and remarkable depth. The 2020 vintage shows both the power and purity that define this Grand Cru, with enough complexity and balance for extended aging while already showing compelling layers with gentle aeration.

Serving: ~14–16 °C; decant 1–2 hours in youth to broaden aromatics.

Pairing: Roast duck with berry jus, herb-crusted lamb, game birds, mushroom dishes, or aged Comté.

Drinking Window (estimate): 2035–2070+

The 2020 La Tâche Grand Cru had not been racked and so I was able to taste this from barrel, unlike the Romanée-Conti. It has haunting precision on the nose, introverted at first, dark berry fruit like the Grands-Echézeaux but with more complexity. The palate is very pure with a granular texture on the entry, immense depth and precision, a killer line of acidity with a very sapid finish. Quintessentially La Tâche. If only there were a time-machine so I could fast-forward and taste this exquisite La Tâche in bottle. 97-99
