Vintage 2020

In Burgundy, the harvest is over for most farmers. It has been a year with a lot of heat both in July and August. A huge problem this year has been leaf-thinning and canopy management. Those who have not paid enough attention to the leaf-thinning experienced problems with sunburned grapes.

In Cote d’Or, it is especially the heat that has been tricky this season. First and foremost, some grapes have been burned by the sun resulting in raisin...

Written Notes

The 2020 vintage in Burgundy was warm, dry, and early, marked by low yields and small berries. Despite the heat, Romanée-Conti retained remarkable freshness thanks to the vineyard’s limestone soils, old vines, and meticulous viticulture. The result is a vintage that combines concentration and ripeness with precision and balance, often described as more complete and harmonious than the cooler 2021, and less overtly powerful than 2018 or 2019.

Appearance: Medium ruby with a luminous, translucent core; vibrant and pure, showing depth without opacity.

Nose: Profound and multi-layered. Ripe red and dark fruits—wild cherry, raspberry, red plum, and hints of blackcurrant—are interwoven with rose petal, violet, Asian spice, and subtle sandalwood. As it opens, complex notes of incense, forest floor, crushed stone, and gentle savory umami emerge, all delivered with remarkable aromatic precision.

Palate: Medium-bodied yet intensely expressive. The palate is seamless and layered, offering concentrated red fruit wrapped in ultra-fine, powdery tannins. Acidity is perfectly judged, providing lift and tension beneath the wine’s natural richness. Flavors evolve from cherry and raspberry to spice, tea leaf, and mineral tones, with extraordinary textural finesse and inner energy.

Finish: Exceptionally long, refined, and resonant, with lingering red fruit, floral notes, spice, and a cool mineral echo that slowly fades.

Overall: Romanée-Conti 2020 is a benchmark modern classic—uniting the generosity of a warm vintage with the vineyard’s unmistakable elegance and purity. It is more expressive and complete than 2021, less massive than 2018, and defined by harmony, depth, and effortless length. A wine of great beauty and long life.

Serving: 14–16 °C; gentle decanting for 1–2 hours recommended.

Pairing: Refined dishes—roast pigeon, duck, veal, game birds, truffle-accented cuisine, or simply on its own.

Drinking window (estimate): 2028–2050+.

Good looking normal size bottle, in an perfect condition and has by the neck level. Colour is purple, youthful and deep . On the nose it is intense, refined and complex. The taste is focused, rich, vigor, with silky tannins, full-bodied, with satin texture, complex, balanced structure and youthful. On the palate it is layered and has licorice, dried-fruit, mineral, chocolate, perfumed and cassis flavours. The finish is long, round and extensive. This wine is sophisticated,a mouthfilling and impressive. I paid around 5k€ + a bottle. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 20-30 years and decant at least 2h before tasting. Too expensive for quality. I do recommend.
