Parker 95-97 points: The 2010 Romanee St. Vivant is dazzling. An exotic mosaic of sweet spices, red berries, dried flowers and mint bursts onto the palate in this viscerally thrilling, captivating Romanee St. Vivant. The 2010 is notable for so many attributes, but one that stands out is the sheer beauty and texture of the breathtaking finish. Anticipated maturity: 2030-2050.

I tasted the 2010s twice from barrel, once in the summer just as ...

The Story

Romanée-Conti lies on brown limestone soils 60 cm deep with a major clay component. Romanée-Saint-Vivant has similar but deeper (90 cm) soils. Higher up, La Romanée occupies a markedly sloping site (12%) and the soil texture is less clayey. La Tâche and La Grande Rue share brown limestone soils, rather shallow at the top end with deeper rendzinas lower down. The same is true for the Richebourg, depending on slope and aspect. The underlying roc...

2010 Harvest

The vigneron's work throughout the year is nothing other than a dialogue with his natural environment. The dialogue often becomes a combat in order to lead the vineyards and the crop towards the harvest and away from the precipices that lurk and have names such as: Mildew, Oidium, Botrytis... and many others.

Rarely has a vintage been so close to the precipice and then managed to save itself so successfully as the 2010. At...

THE 2010 BURGUNDY VINTAGE

Compared with 2009, these figures represent a deficit of 25 percent in red and 16 percent in white.

It was a cold, drawn-out winter, some two degrees cooler than the average, though rainfall and sunshine were normal. There was one severe attack of frost on December 22nd, just before Christmas, which caused widespread damage on the upside of the main road from Beaune to Dijon. In many places the road is on highe...

Written Notes

Garnet red colour with brick red hue. Expressive nose with distinct oak spices, toasting aroma, discreet fruit in the background, demanding a lot of time to open up. On the palate powerful with fine aromatic herbs, ripe fruit, excellent structure and length. Another typical 2010 where the oak is slightly more upfront than the fruit. However it is just a question of time till the balance between oak and fruit will be perfectly established. Overall this wine turns out to be a bit more elegant than the 2010 Richebourg.

All that I could think when I first put my nose in the glass was 'wow!' as the airy and very cool nose of ultra-elegant spice, floral and herbal nuances greeted me. Add to this plenty of attractive nuances to the kaleidoscopically layered red currant and plum suffused aromas and you have something pretty special. This is, not surprisingly, much more refined than the Grands Ech as the supporting tannins on the silky middle weight flavors are extremely fine-grained yet notably dense as the explosive finish is quite firm. Despite the tightly wound structure the overall impression of the mouth feel is one of delicacy and ultimate refinement. This should be a particularly excellent vintage for what has become one of the stars of this gorgeously deep portfolio of wines

Complex and elegant nose with pencil shave, licorice, spices, cherries and sauteed almonds. Medium-bodied, intense, concentrated, and delicately rich palate with subtle tannins, seductive flavours, silky texture and vivid acidity.A harmonious wine – close to perfection. Wait another 10-15 years and we are there:)

Pale ruby red in color. Luscious and vivid aromas sets the pace immediately. A whole garden of roses, bright red fruits, rosehip, subtle layers of spices, strawberries and herbs delivers a complete spectrum. The palate opens up to a smooth and racy mouth-feel with elegant texture and a focused impression of ripe red berries, rose petals and an integrated spiciness. Great composition.
