Romanée Conti 1971

The 1971 DRC Romanee Conti didn’t disappoint either. This was clearly the most concentrated and deepest with a more brothy and soupy edge. Its exotic fruit had all the colors – red, purple, black and even blue, and there was great bricking to its flavors. This was a perfect bottle that oozed oil and the richness that followed. This was another perfect bottle; they just kept coming! This super smacker had a kiss of celery soda to go with its oily concentration (99).

The 1971 Burgundy vintage occupies a unique place among older Côte de Nuits years. It has earned a reputation for silkiness, texture and persistence, and in vertical tastings the 1971 Romanée-Conti is frequently highlighted for its exceptional maturity and complexity. While not always as flamboyantly aromatic as some other historic vintages, its balance, depth and structural harmony have helped it remain highly regarded among collectors and tasters even decades later. In expert flights that include multiple classics, the 1971 often steals the show for its nuanced old-world character.

Appearance: Mature garnet with softened edges and amber hints at the rim, reflecting extensive bottle evolution and tertiary development. 

Nose: Profound and layered, offering complex tertiary aromatics of dried dark fruit, truffle, forest floor, leather, cedar smoke and earth, with lingering hints of rose petal, spice and muted red fruit echoes. Mature notes of tobacco and mushroom develop with air, giving deep complexity and intrigue.

Palate: Medium-to-full bodied with a velvety yet structured framework. The mature palate displays rich dried plum, black cherry reduction, savory leather, forest humus and warming spice, framed by supple, integrated acidity and softened tannins. There’s a depth of savoury character and developed complexity that carries across the mid-palate. 

Finish: Long and elegant, with lingering secondary and tertiary notes—earth, cedar, spice and faint mineral echoes—suggesting layered evolution rather than primary fruit intensity. 

Overall: A classic fully mature expression of Romanée-Conti—complex, nuanced and richly developed. The 1971 vintage emphasizes texture and harmony over youthful fruit power, revealing the profound depth that long-aged Burgundy can offer. It’s showing tertiary character at its best: balanced, resonant and deeply satisfying.

Serving & Pairing: Serve ~16–18 °C, with gentle 60 min decanting  to allow mature aromatics to flourish. Pair with braised lamb, roasted game, truffle dishes, slow-roasted beef or aged cheeses that complement old-world complexity.

Drinking Window: Now–2045+

A wine of a life-time on this showing. A spellbinding perfume of Vosne spices, tea and dark cherries, all “riffing” together splendidly. Round and velvety, abounding with nuance and depth, rich with a ravishing core of sweet fruit, superlatives are readily exhausted. At the mid palate, incense, cranberries, pepper and forest floor. The wine is mesmerizingly beautiful with a further “gentle” eruption of cinnamon, ginger and pomegranate.
