Sulje

A legendary vintage which is in the all-time top five. Well-balanced wines; the whites have acidity that is perfectly offset by luscious ripe fruit.

The 2004/05 winter was very cold and delayed the start of the vegetation cycle. Some red vineyards were still recovering from the hail damage of 2004 and hence offered limited yields.

Spring was uneven with cold and warm spells that prolonged flowering and caused uneven fruit-set. After a...

The Story

“As if, in this square of earth, the gods had bequeathed us a memory of the fascinating vestige of a timeless perfection.” — Richard Olney. The wine of Prince de Conti, she is velvet, seduction and mystery. It is the most Proustian of all great wines.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is without question the most famous estate in Burgundy and arguably the greatest, producing some of the best wines in the world. It is probably one of the mos...

Wine Information

2005 Harvest
The making of a vintage is like a voyage, an adventure, whose final destination is unknown. Nature has its own, often capricious, rule. Our only skill is to learn, with humility, to adapt to it.

The fruit that we saw passing by on the sorting table during these eight days of harvest was the most beautiful we have seen since 1999. Who would have predicted this, after an excessively hot Spring and a cold and cloudy August, even ...

Vuosikerta 2005

2005 VINTAGE in Burgundy / Hopes made way for certainty.

2005 promises to produce outstanding whites, with elegance and opulence beyond the norm, and superb, seductive and well-structured red wines.

The richness of these wines perfectly expresses the diversity of the region. A wine of excellent quality is achieved above all through the ripeness and healthiness of the grapes. For this reason, thanks to the almost ideal climatic conditions...

The 2005 was deep, dark and brooding. It was wound up, but in a regal and reserved way.  There were aromas of cola, spice and cinnamon to go with its rich but very shy fruit.  The palate came across extremely wealthy, ‘towering’ above anything else so far.  The richness and flesh, and balance between the two, were extraordinary.  This was red velvet city, dripping with jewels of fruit.  It was still a bit shy, but everyone knew it was a star.  This was a va va voom wine, so pure!  Suckling summed it up succinctly as ‘stunning, emotional wine, perfect.’ (98+pts)

A rich, dense ruby color, hints at the dark fruit nose of blackberry and currant that carries through the palate, interwoven with complex aromas of black licorice, anise and creme de cassis. On the palate, the wine opens up to reveal an earthiness, with brown spice, cigar box and ripe dark fruits that linger throughout the extracted and long finish. The texture is opulent and rich, yet has a velvety quality with supple density. Rich, fine-grained tannins are balanced with ripe fruit, acidity and oak.

“An exceptionally floral yet restrained nose with aromas of both rose and violets that combine with a panoply of spice notes yet the overall impression is classic young RC as the nose is both cool and reserved yet aristocratic. The sweet, intense, focused, detailed and vibrant flavors offer superb drive and punch though there is not the sheer scale of the LT yet they’re finer and somehow even purer, indeed absolutely crystalline though I kept asking myself how this was possible as the purity of the La Tâche is itself mind blowing. The descriptor of ‘power without weight’ came to mind again and again as the flavors slide down the throat with no sense of heaviness yet the impact and precision of the presently somewhat austere finish is quite simply hard to believe. In a word, this is mind bending and in a visceral sense, this is a monumental wine that of real emotional impact. Genius in a glass.”(99+pts BH)

Deep ruby-red. Brooding, multidimensional aromas and flavors of blackberry, minerals, flowers, spices, chocolate and musky earth. Silky and utterly spherical, yet with superb definition and lift carrying straight through to the finish. This titillates all the taste receptors of the palate. A wine of great purity and precision, finishing quite powerful, with firm but fine tannins and spectacular perfume. This should live a very long and glorious life.

Bright crimson with a surprisingly deep shaded rim already. Seems even more complex than the Tache on the nose a such a jewel! So sturdy and heady and rich and flattering. More hints of a mature DRC with mushrooms and violets than the Tache which is a little more pointu and direct rather than this cloud in which one can lose oneself. So complete on the palate a less raw than the Tache seemed last night. Such concentration. Dangerously enjoyable. Just like a string on a cello that has been plucked and reverberates. So long. Great savour and juiciness. The weight of fruit is such that it is easy to overlook those pretty marked tannins that are so easy, ripe yet fresh! Wilder than la Tache. Mind you, I'm glad I tasted this in blissful ignorance of the price. Tasted: 19-Feb-2008

There are more startling complexities in the 2005 Romanee-Conti than in any other wine here today, perhaps in the vintage. A stunning, high-toned and utterly unique perfume of pink grapefruit, blood orange, tangerine rind, vivid rose petal, musk, cinnamon, sage, and cassis seduces the olfactors in kaleidoscopic rotation. I hesitate to court sacrilege or ridicule with Germanic allusions but it is impossible not to imagine a great Pinot scented with Gewurztraminer and Scheurebe. On the palate, a pure, clean meatiness emerges, like butchering a meadow-fed lamb, bitter-sweet flowers flying forth in an inner-mouth profusion. Soy and black truffle lend a dark, savory note to the proceedings, leading the long finishing procession over a path strewn with rose petals. Fear not: despite its silken texture, there are abundant tannins woven into this amazing tapestry as well, and I am sure those lucky enough to own some can retain it as collateral, then leave it to their children, safe in the knowledge it has not decayed. Reverential drinking after a dozen or more years would, however, be my preference 99-100p

Once the grapes in these fabled vineyards had reached a potential alcohol of 13%, reports Aubert de Villaine, he was ready to pick, because conditions had seldom been so conducive to perfect ripeness (including that of the stems). It was all done in a week, commencing with La Tache and Romanee Conti, and finishing on September 23 with Romanee-St.-Vivant (and Montrachet, on which I shall report at a future date). De Villaine intended to bottle in March or April by gravity in six-barrel lots, as has become general practice here over the past decade.
