Vintage 2018

Burgundy 2018: An ideal vintage

The 2018 vintage was met with a unanimous show of satisfaction from the north of Bourgogne to the south. The exceptional weather, especially during the harvest period, resulted in grapes with perfect health, allowing picking to extend over almost a whole month. Initial tastings ahead of the Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction have given an early idea that 2018 will be a truly great year.

Written Notes

The 2018 Burgundy vintage was one of the standout years of the decade: after a wet winter and spring, exceptional summer heat and dry conditions produced grapes with excellent ripeness and concentration. Growers had to balance high sugar and phenolic ripeness with retaining freshness, and the very best sites — especially clay-rich and cooler slopes — excelled with wines showing rich fruit, fine tannins, lively acidity and superb balance. 2018 is broadly regarded as one of the great recent Burgundy vintages, capable of producing wines with depth, poise and significant age potential.

Appearance: Medium ruby-purple with youthful luminosity and depth, typical of a rich Pinot Noir from a strong vintage.

Nose: Intensely aromatic and layered. Perfumed scents of wild cherry, raspberry, rose petal and violet are joined by spice and subtle exotic notes. There’s a refined mineral thread and delicate earthy nuance that complements the fruit, giving complexity and harmony.

Palate: Medium-bodied with remarkable finesse and precision. The core shows pure red fruit — cherry, cranberry and wild strawberry — framed by ultra-fine, velvety tannins and lively acidity. Subtle hints of spice, crushed stone mineral, and floral complexity add dimension while keeping the profile elegant and balanced.

Finish: Long, refined and persistent, with lingering red fruit, floral lift, spice and a cool minerality that carries through the close.

Overall: A superb expression of Romanée-Conti and a highlight of the 2018 vintage: combining intense aromatics, refined structure and harmonious balance. It’s both expressive now with aeration and unmistakably built for long-term cellaring.

Serving: 14–16 °C; gentle decant (1–2 hours) recommended to broaden aromatics.

Pairing: Roast duck with berry reduction, herb-crusted lamb, game birds, mushroom dishes, or aged Comté.

Drinking window (estimate): 2030–2055+

The 2018 Romanée-Conti Grand Cru sports a limpid ruby color. It is quintessential "RC" on the nose, which features crystalline scents of wild strawberry and cranberry fruit, crushed limestone, oyster shell and pressed rose petal. With aeration there is even a suggestion of crushed flint. The palate is medium-bodied with super-fine tannins that frame the ethereal red fruit. Understated yet imbued with stunning elegance. The finish seems to go on forever. Remarkable.
