The Story

The Hill of Corton lies in the midst of a cluster of famous wine-growing villages - Ladoix- Serrigny, Aloxe-Corton, Pernand-Vergelesses and Savigny-lès-Beaune - with, to the north, the southern end of the Côte de Nuits where vineyards mingle with stone quarries (Comblanchien limestone). The vineyards lie at heights of 250-330 metres and form a kind of amphitheatre not found elsewhere in the Côte. The Hill of Corton produces white Corton-Charle...

Vintage 2012

2012 was beset by unusual weather that didn’t spare the vines! A mild winter, spring-like March, cool spring with frosts, summer-like May, cooler, wetter June, a variable summer with heatwaves, hail and storms… Because of the cold damp spring, some of the vine flowers didn’t set and form fruit, there was millerandage (where the flowers aren’t fully fertilised and give small berries) and high pressure from mildew and odium. Written Notes

Almost roasted ripeness to the aromas of musky raspberry, pungent spices (clove, cinnamon, mace) and underbrush, plus a suggestion of chocolate I did not find in any other of DRC's 2012s. Ripe, plush and spicy, with the raspberry character following through in the mouth; boasts superb volume given shape by a sound mineral spine and complex soil tones. Finishes with ripe, pliant tannins. I find this clearly riper than the 2013 version

A markedly ripe yet still fresh nose offers up spicy and gamy notes of red and dark berry fruit scents. There is a lovely sense of energy to the detailed middle weight flavors that possess fine depth of material and plenty of power on the beautifully long and moderately firm finish that delivers excellent length. As was the case last year from cask, what this does not have, at least not at present, is outstanding depth though it's reasonable to assume that more will be in the offing with time in bottle though this is obviously not a certainty
