The Story

Well-cared for vines, strictly controlled yields and as late as possible harvest produces an aromatic and opulent wine. Deeply coloured, La Tâche develops a palate of extraordinary aromas of dark fruits, truffle and spices.

Rich and concentrated, its bouquet releases infinite tones that melt in the mouth to form a lovely ensemble – always exceptional, even in the difficult vintages. Hence in 1950 and 1951, it was the only wine in the domain...

1962 La Tâche Domaine de la Romanée-Conti
What counts most against the 1962 is that it came right after the incomparable 1961. On the other hand this lack of fame has hidden many a splendid wine from the general public, such as this monumental La Tache. I had the opportunity to purchase this La Tache straight from the domain when I visited it for the first time in 1991, so it looked like it was bottled yesterday. Since this vintage is also th...

Written Notes

What counts most against the 1962 is that it came right after the incomparable 1961. On the other hand this lack of fame has hidden many a splendid wine from the general public, such as this monumental La Tache. I had the opportunity to purchase this La Tache straight from the domain when I visited it for the first time in 1991, so it looked like it was bottled yesterday. Since this vintage is also the year of my birth, there is always more feeling involved. The wine proved worthy of its reputation - a splendid, perfect balance between fruit and acidity, which is typical to this vintage. An intense and abundant taste with chocolate and leather, and a full, pleasantly heavy nature. It reminded me of the almost "mushy" thickness of 1947 Petrus. A genuinely elegant and long aftertaste. Truly a great wine. I consider this, together with Unico, the best wine of this vintage.

It doesn’t get much better than the 1962 DRC La Tache out of magnum, especially when it comes from the cellar of Wolfgang Grunewald. What a nose! Some similar themes appeared: meat, sauce, rich, deep…this was heavy metal, including the iron ore deposits. It had a rich, heavy palate; I was actually surprised how rich it was, given my recent experiences with a handful of 1962s. I found the vintage to be maturing, becoming elegant, but this magnum was no ballerina. ‘Hoisin’ and ‘pepper’ came from Jef and Joe, not necessarily in that order. This was long and sexy juice. I think it was Christian who said that he had ‘a dream about DRC, and this is it.’ Amen (99M).
