The Story

Well-cared for vines, strictly controlled yields and as late as possible harvest produces an aromatic and opulent wine. Deeply coloured, La Tâche develops a palate of extraordinary aromas of dark fruits, truffle and spices.

Rich and concentrated, its bouquet releases infinite tones that melt in the mouth to form a lovely ensemble – always exceptional, even in the difficult vintages. Hence in 1950 and 1951, it was the only wine in the domain...

Wine Information

eParker 97 points / The 2012 La Tâche was picked September 25 and 27 at 21 hectoliters per hectare. It is blessed with one of those aromatic profiles that stops you in your tracks, in some ways stops time itself. There is an intensity and drive here, a mixture of red and black fruit, autumn leaves and wet limestone and later, roof tiles on a hot July afternoon. The palate is medium-bodied and nigh perfectly balanced. The tannins are filigree, ...

Vintage 2012

2012 was beset by unusual weather that didn’t spare the vines! A mild winter, spring-like March, cool spring with frosts, summer-like May, cooler, wetter June, a variable summer with heatwaves, hail and storms… Because of the cold damp spring, some of the vine flowers didn’t set and form fruit, there was millerandage (where the flowers aren’t fully fertilised and give small berries) and high pressure from mildew and odium. Temperatures went ri...

Written Notes

Any day one gets to try a La Tache is a good day. A wine of this age could always be dodgy for any number of reasons, and 1970 was never the greatest Burgundy vintage – excellent in Bordeaux, but both 1969 and 1971 were far better in Burgundy (not so in Bordeaux). Even 1972 was a better year in Burgundy, though poor in Bordeaux – just shows how much those two can differ. I loved it, perhaps more than others there on the day, but I really thought this was a sublimely complex Burgundy. Possible the score reflects a smidge of sentimentality at a wine drinking so well after 40 years, but I can live with that. This offered fungal, truffle, warm earth notes. Mature and amazingly complex. Supple, clean and still with life. Hints of caramel. Nice length. Had that glorious Burgundian complexity. 97
