The Story

The Montrachet family consists of grand five Grands Crus grown in the two villages of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. These two share the Montrachet and Bâtard-Montrachet appellations. Chevalier and Bienvenues belong to Puligny, Criots belongs to Chassagne. These Grands Crus are the most southerly of the Côte-d'Or, and lie between Meursault in the north and Santenay in the south. Their origins go back to the Middle Ages - the work...

2016 RED BURGUNDY VINTAGE REPORT

The 2016 harvest was, of course, later for Pinot Noir in the Côtes de Nuits, and some climats had different productions depending on how they weathered the frost of April 26th. In this report I will talk about each of the producers’ allocations to illustrate the variations between the totals from the 2015 and 2016 vintages. I will also seek to give you an idea of the style of the 2016 red wines versus those ...

Written Notes

The 2016 Burgundy vintage was unusual — marked by severe frost in the Montrachet area which drastically reduced yields and left individual owners (including DRC) unable to produce a standalone Montrachet bottling. As a result, DRC’s 2016 Montrachet was created as part of a unique collaborative blend with several other top Burgundy houses, making it extraordinarily rare and distinctive. Despite the adversity of the growing season, this wine from the 2016 harvest has been described as excellent and expressive, reflecting both the vintage’s challenges and the quality inherent in the parcels used.

Appearance: Pale golden straw with bright clarity and youthful intensity.

Nose: Complex and perfumed, leading with ripe orchard fruit like pear, apple and citrus zest, intertwined with floral freshness and subtle honeyed brioche. Underneath, there are hints of saline minerality, white flowers and subtle spice, giving layered aromatic depth.

Palate: Dry and medium-to-full bodied, with an elegant, seamless texture. Concentrated flavours of ripe pear, yellow apple and citrus pith are supported by vibrant acidity and a refined mineral backbone. Subtle notes of hazelnut, creamy lees and chalky minerality add complexity, while the wine’s structure remains poised and balanced, showing both richness and tension.

Finish: Long, harmonious and persistent, with lingering orchard fruit, saline minerality and a touch of spice that carry through the close.

Overall: A rare and refined Montrachet expression born from a uniquely challenging vintage. Despite its tiny production and collaborative origins, the 2016 Montrachet displays the depth, elegance and finishing power expected of DRC’s Grand Cru white — rich yet agile, expressive without heaviness, and revealing layers of complexity that will reward patient cellaring.

Serving: 10–12 °C; gentle decanting (30–60 min) recommended in youth to broaden aromatics.

Pairing: Lobster with beurre blanc, roasted scallops, sea bass with citrus sauce, creamy poultry dishes, or aged Comté.

Drinking Window (estimate): 2028–2050+ (built for graceful evolution).

A masterpiece in a glass, this Montrachet reveals unparalleled elegance and complexity. The nose is a symphony of ripe stone fruits—peach and apricot—intertwined with fresh citrus zest, delicate white flowers, and a touch of honeyed brioche. On the palate, it is profound yet ethereal, with a creamy texture balanced by vibrant acidity. Layers of minerality unfold, evoking crushed oyster shells and chalky finesse, while subtle hints of hazelnut and fine spices linger endlessly. The finish is transcendent, a testament to its grandeur and potential for decades of aging. Simply divine. 97p
