The Story

Richebourg is a king of a wine: the colonnade of the Louvre, the Château of Versailles. You are impressed by its finesse, its length and its delicate sensations, endlessly changing. The fact that no element dominates the others enables you to appreciate all of its aromas, on the nose and on the palate. In any given vintage, Richebourg is always one of the last wines to be drunk. Not because it is too aggressive when young; simply because it ne...

Written Notes

The first wine of the next flight set a high bar early. It was a wild and wet Burgundy with a ‘crazy good’ nose. There was superhero-like fruit here with rose and cherry leading, but a tropical and foresty mix that exuded incredible complexity. There was a vimful spice of cedar meeting cabinet, and orange edges rounded out its abyss of a nose. The palate possessed incredible power and acidity; this bottle was in perfect condition, still so fresh and youthful. I was convinced it was from 1952, but it was not, of course. It was a 1941 DRC Richebourg. ‘Fantastic’ and ‘wow’ appeared in my notes multiple times, and mint, tomato and wild red fruits danced on the palate. This was an extraordinary wine (97).

The 1941 Richebourg Grand Cru comes from a vintage you simply never see. It was proffered by collector Doug Barzeley (indeed, the same bottle appears in his co-authored "Burgundy Vintages" book). It is surprisingly deep in color, given its age and vintage. If it had been from another domaine it would arouse suspicion of being adulterated in some way. The bouquet is beautifully defined with earthy red fruit that has upheld impressive freshness. The medium-bodied palate is balanced upon the acidity with remnants of red berry fruit that feel composed. Maybe there is a touch of dryness towards the low-key finish but that is instantly forgiven by the over-achieving performance. Profound in many, many ways.

A moving experience. A lovely, delicate wine. Like fine lace. No power – just sweet and stylish. 99 pts.
