The Story

Richebourg is a king of a wine: the colonnade of the Louvre, the Château of Versailles. You are impressed by its finesse, its length and its delicate sensations, endlessly changing. The fact that no element dominates the others enables you to appreciate all of its aromas, on the nose and on the palate. In any given vintage, Richebourg is always one of the last wines to be drunk. Not because it is too aggressive when young; simply because it ne...

2006 Harvest

A vigneron's challenge again !

At the time of this writing, the vineyards, relieved of their fruit, have begun to change colour. The soft October sun is caressing the red and gold hills. The villages are quiet again after the hubbub of the harvest. The streets are filled with generous fragrances coming from the wineries where fermentations are proceeding. The birth of this new vintage is a real pleasure to the senses !

2006 VINTAGE in Burgundy

The personality of Burgundy wines makes the difference

A charmer. Such is the epithet most frequently employed when Burgundy's newest vintage is evoked. Nearly two months after the grape harvest, and following a year typified by rather fantastical weather, Burgundy is finally catching its breath. The 2006 vintage, a preoccupying one which never allowed an idle moment, both in the vineyards and in the cellars, exc...

Written Notes

The 2006 DRC Richebourg was stinkier than anything so far, with a bit of animal, wet hay and grass here. It was wild yet fleshy, full of character, the wine that wanted to stay up all night. Musk and a pungent goodness were present along with black fruits. The palate was cleaner and lighter than I expected, frankly a bit disappointing after the RSV, and a rare time when the RSV outshined its bigger brother. The palate was a bit watery upfront, still with nice, rosy flavors. There were some classic stems and cedar, and it did gain a bit in the glass, fattening and fleshing out.

Moderately intense, ruby colour. Elegant and complex nose with ripe wild strawberry fruit, earthiness and root vegetable aromas topped with chocolate clove. Moderately powerful, yet surprisingly feminine style for Richebourg. Crisp and intense red fruit character, subtle structure and long vibrant finish with cedary and gently mouthdrying finish.

Sweeter and more fragrant fruit than the Échezeaux and Grands-Échezeaux. Already charming and enchanting. But there is still a little tight pepperiness to it. Markedly fresh, delicate in the mid palate but then a cloaked power on the finish. Very long, silky but firm tannins, like reinforced silk. 18.5/20 points

“Most impressive and this is a bit like the GE in that the natural elegance of the ‘06 vintage has tamed somewhat the inherent tendency for there to be a certain robustness in Richebourg to create a harmonious whole. Now that the wine is in bottle, it struck me as a block of stone from which only the vaguest outlines of the final form of the statue have yet to emerge. Superb potential.”(95pts BH)

2006 RICHEBOURG GRAND CRU A completely undeveloped nose that just wont open up in the glass. Five years old it gives a way just hints of very dark fruit, a touch of spice, raw meat and earthy notes. Impressive how a wine can be so deep and closed at the same time. Like staring into an abyss! Very full body, quite tannic and astringent. This is a brooding, big block of dark fruit and earthy notes. Very long but undeveloped and will need ample ageing. However there’s an impressive balance and structure and probably will blossom into something superb but it will take time! Drink 2020-2030 93+p.
