The Story

“As if, in this square of earth, the gods had bequeathed us a memory of the fascinating vestige of a timeless perfection.” — Richard Olney. The wine of Prince de Conti, she is velvet, seduction and mystery. It is the most Proustian of all great wines.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is without question the most famous estate in Burgundy and arguably the greatest, producing some of the best wines in the world. Vintage 1957

Burgundy: Firm and intensely flavoured wines, acidity less marked than in Bordeaux.

Low temperatures in spring resulted in late flowering. After a warm start to summer, August and September were cool and rainy. The resulting wines were tight with pronounced acidity, which needed time to soften. It's this acidic backbone which has kept them alive to this day — now fully mature, the fruit shows itself better.

Written Notes

A clear, medium-intensity, black cherry red colour. A complex and giving nose, with notes of spice, toasted leather and a nuanced floweriness. The palate is broad and balanced by the right amount of refreshing acidity. The silky mouthfeel gives the wine an elegant air, but it lacks the complexity and harmony of a super-wine. Each time this 'meditation wine' is smelled, new nuances are discovered. Still in the full bloom of her beauty, this divine creature will no longer improve with maturation. Decanted 45 minutes before serving. Lasted 35 minutes in the glass.
