The Story

Romanée-Conti lies on brown limestone soils 60 cm deep with a major clay component. Romanée-Saint-Vivant has similar but deeper (90 cm) soils. Higher up, La Romanée occupies a markedly sloping site (12%) and the soil texture is less clayey. La Tâche and La Grande Rue share brown limestone soils, rather shallow at the top end with deeper rendzinas lower down. The same is true for the Richebourg, depending on slope and aspect. Vintage 2001

2001 VINTAGE in Burgundy

A promising start to the new millennium...

Growing season and weather conditions

The winter, during which the vines lay dormant, was a mild one.

The first signs of bud-burst came early but wintry conditions in April accompanied by frosts in the most exposed vineyards slowed down the start of the growing season.

Written Notes

The 2001 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru has a perfumed bouquet of lifted red currant and wild strawberry that is quite flamboyant for this vintage. I adore the plushness and the life-affirming definition. The palate is very pure and seductive, at first displaying slightly softer tannin than previous bottles, but it seems to gain backbone with aeration. There is an almost Richebourg-like density about this Romanée-Saint-Vivant, which has swagger to spare, even if I do not regard it as the greatest that Aubert de Villaine has ever overseen. Tasted at the DRC/Leroy comparative dinner in Hong Kong.

“This displays a positively classic nose of soaring Asian spices, ripe plum and a gamut of ripe, pure and lacy red and black fruits with the latter predominating all wrapped together with a seductive kiss of sweetly scented, highly perfumed violets; the nose is, in a word, intoxicating. All of this aromatic intensity leads to remarkably powerful, linear, borderline robust flavors that show simply unbe- lievable complexity and stunning length. This will very likely surpass every other RSV from the Domaine in re- cent memory. A dazzling effort.”(96pts BH)

Refined nose with a touch of the herbal. Very elegant. Medium weight. Flowery. A lot of intensity. Very good grip. Fine plus.
