Fantastically pure with the classic spice box, hoisin and soy nose followed by big, rich, very structured flavors that display notes of earth, leather and tea. The tannins are big, ripe and are completely buffered by the sap with length that is simply phenomenal. This remains completely primary in character and seems not to have budged at all since it was bottled. A genuinely great vintage for La Tâche that is softer in the mouth than the '96 ...

The Story

Well-cared for vines, strictly controlled yields and as late as possible harvest produces an aromatic and opulent wine. Deeply coloured, La Tâche develops a palate of extraordinary aromas of dark fruits, truffle and spices.

Rich and concentrated, its bouquet releases infinite tones that melt in the mouth to form a lovely ensemble – always exceptional, even in the difficult vintages. Hence in 1950 and 1951, it was the only wine in the domain...

Vintage 1996

1996 VINTAGE in Burgundy

Maturity levels were in general high following a long hot summer. The wines from the famous Pinot Noir have an intense ruby red colour with lush red fruit aromas. They are wines that are comparable with the outstanding 88s and 89s. The whites are just as outstanding full-bodied with elegant vibrant Chardonnay fruit and sweet white flower and grilled nut aromas. These are wines that have the potential to age magnific...

Written Notes

JJ found the 1996 DRC La Tache like ‘Bordeaux.’ I found it classic ’96 – screechy with its long acid, but it also had some fatness to its fruit, decadently both purple and red. Slate, rubber tire and minerals all blended with the acid, and menthol was hidden underneath. It felt like the menthol will ultimately take over the character of this wine in time. The palate was coy, softer than I expected, still possessing length and grit with nice tannin definition, and more menthol and slate on its finish. The nose was special, but at the moment, the palate of this LT was shut down, although the wine still screams potential

Excellent ruby-red color. Initially reticent black fruit nose opened to reveal notes of violet, vanilla and char. Rather unforthcoming in the mouth, but very intensely flavored, pure and penetrating. Superb sweetness is already apparent. Very firm finish, with tannins coating the entire mouth. Will require at least six to eight years of patience. 93-96

Surprisingly, looks more mature than the Échézeaux at the rim and is even a bit paler. Heady bouquet of violets and game (nothing is perfect but the bouquet is really very interesting, says Aubert with dramatic understatement) – the start of real complexity and absolutely gorgeous on the palate. So opulent and rich and layered and throat warming. Jewel bright fruit, though the tannins are definitely still present. Very long and layered. Really dances on the palate! Still a little tight.

A genuinely great vintage for La Tâche that is softer in the mouth than the '96 Grands Ech and this should improve for another decade and last for 50 years. Very classy juice. Note: while it's happened only twice in my experience, the '96 can be intensely vegetal on the nose and not exhibit the purity that the wine is justifiably famous for; however, I have tasted so many outstanding bottles of the '96 LT that I view these two examples as outliers.

Good mature colour. Really profound, rich nose. Excellent concentration of fruit here. Full body. Lots of energy. Still quite a bit of tannin. Marvelous fruit. Real vigour and depth. Excellent quality.
