The Story

“As if, in this square of earth, the gods had bequeathed us a memory of the fascinating vestige of a timeless perfection.” — Richard Olney. The wine of Prince de Conti, she is velvet, seduction and mystery. It is the most Proustian of all great wines.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is without question the most famous estate in Burgundy and arguably the greatest, producing some of the best wines in the world. It is probably one of the mos...

2007 harvest

The 2007 harvest is finished. The weather is fine with a wind blowing from the North, which both delights the vigneron and makes him regret that these ideal conditions did not arrive a little earlier! But we have to adapt to the will of the climate and we perfectly know that it is in this difficult context of Burgundy with its tortuous weather, softened by exceptionally micro-climatic conditions, especially at the end of the se...

Written Notes

Deep medium red. Less expressive on the nose than La T a che but equally precise, hinting at redcurrant, cherry, exotic spices and wild herbs. Then silky-sweet, thick and deep, with an almost salty peppery quality giving the middle palate an extraordinarily tactile impression. The herbs and spices carry through to the extremely long, gripping finish, where the suave tannins are totally buffered by the wine's sheer extract. This actually strikes my palate as sweeter today than La Tache. But both of these wines should really be forgotten in the cellar for a good 12 years.

An intense crimson. Fruity and floral, the bouquet reveals notes of fig, blackberry and red fruits, as well as hints of violet – a signature of exceptional vintages. Powerful and concentrated, with great balance, the 2007 reveals strong black-fruit flavours. The huge presence of pinot noir imparts an inimitable freshness and elegance – and gentle tannic backbone.

I have never been treated to such a profusion of floral perfume from this legendary site as rose over the glass of 2007 Romanee-Conti. Hyacinth, rose, gladiola, and iris are underlain by scents of moss-covered, damp stone, wild ginger, and diverse tiny red fruits... Along with persistent inner-mouth profusion of floral perfume come savory, irresistibly juicy raspberry and pomegranate as well as an impression of marrow-rich, multi-boned meat stock. A wafting, wave-like finish harbors the sort of exhilarating sheer refreshment one looks for in white wine, and a kaleidoscopic interchange of colorful floral, spice, fruit, carnal, and mineral elements such as few wines of any sort can deliver.

Bttl 01088 Bright garnet. So incredibly transparent, nuanced, layered, like sheets of the finest silk, very tender, yet powerful. The silk wraps around and hides every other sensation than this wine, in such a delicate way. Subdued yet flamboyant. Etheral. Spices, flowergarden, dried and fresh fruits, exotic, wide and focused, pure as none. Fresh acidity, few and ripe tannins, almost watery palate in it's uttermost transparent state, playful like a shy child playing in the corner, you barely notice it, but you hear it's lafter. Elusive like a beautiful butterfly in summer. And all of this was written during the aftertaste of the first sip alone. This is magic, and I hope I can taste it once more. It gives length a new meaning. Most will not be impressed by it, I'm sure, but like something transparent and tender from Mozart, take away one note, and it would not be a masterpiece.
