The Story

“As if, in this square of earth, the gods had bequeathed us a memory of the fascinating vestige of a timeless perfection.” — Richard Olney. The wine of Prince de Conti, she is velvet, seduction and mystery. It is the most Proustian of all great wines.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is without question the most famous estate in Burgundy and arguably the greatest, producing some of the best wines in the world. It is probably one of the mos...

Wine Information

2010 Harvest / The vigneron's work throughout the year is nothing other than a dialogue with his natural environment. The dialogue often becomes a combat in order to lead the vineyards and the crop towards the harvest and away from the precipices that lurk and have names such as: Mildew, Oidium, Botrytis... and many others.

Rarely has a vintage been so close to the precipice and then managed to save itself so successfully as the 2010. At th...

Vintage 2010

THE 2010 BURGUNDY VINTAGE

Compared with 2009, these figures represent a deficit of 25 percent in red and 16 percent in white.

It was a cold, drawn-out winter, some two degrees cooler than the average, though rainfall and sunshine were normal. There was one severe attack of frost on December 22nd, just before Christmas, which caused widespread damage on the upside of the main road from Beaune to Dijon. In many places the road is on highe...

Written Notes

The 2010 was extremely tight and unyielding at first.  It, too, was on the cedary side but times two with lots of dry components like desert, rock and minerals.  Its terroir and acidity unfurled, and this really benefitted from air more so than any other - its finish flexed its superiority with time but it still needed it! Dark crimson. Heady tonic and jewel on the nose – really splendid and vibrant. Majestic. Aubert de Villaine says it’s very rare to find a Romanée-Conti that already manifests itself as that at this early age – really magnificent. Long and layered and rises above the crowd. Long and magic and majestic.

  • 98p

Full bright, deep red. More reticent and brooding on the nose than La Tache, offering aromas of raspberry, wild herbs, smoky minerality and underbrush lifted by pepper and light vegetal nuances. Sweet and dense but tight and penetrating, with terrific peppery, saline lift to the red berry and spice flavors. Displays the sexy early vegetility that's typical of this bottling. Finishes with outstanding building length and energy and utterly noble tannins. Really leaves the tongue tingling

A very sensual wine that conjures up images of silk and lace. The nose is intensely perfumed, complex, and ethereal. On the palate the flavours unfold gently yet persistently right through to the finish. Layers of flavour include delicate red flowers, yang mei/waxberries, nutmeg and cloves. This wine brings to life the phrase, "iron fist in a silk glovecombining intensity and concentration with impressive grace and finesse. Very long length in the finish. This is a gorgeous wine with a long life ahead of it.

Fine colour. Aromatic, minerally nose. Not as fat as La Tache or Richebourg. A bit more of the stems. Best on the follow through. Very, very lovely complex fruit. Marvelous long, lingering finish. Truly excellent. 20.0p

Surprisingly modest wine for being Romanée-Conti. The wine needs a lot of time to evolve and show its true colours. Being decanted for 3 hours, it revealed nothing. Actually it felt even modest, lacking all the vibe what La Tâche 2010 shows. The nose was close. Some volatile, smoky, licorice and cherry aromas. The palate was light with red fruit character and gentle, refined tannins. The finish was slightly warming. If served now, decant for at least 10 hours.

Bright ruby red in color. Intense but precise on the nose with elegant and refined aromas of sleek, bright red fruits, raspberry, cranberries, rose petals and a wealth of subtle spices. On the palate the fine structure becomes evident with silky tannins and an ever-present acidity. Finely inter-woven layers of red berries and red blossom developing towards ripe strawberries, cranberry and pomegranate. Great balance between power, intensity and balance.
  • 98p
Good looking normal size bottle, in an excellent condition and has by the neck level. Colour is purple, deep, full and youthful . On the nose it is intense, wide, fresh and seductive. The taste is harmonious, focused, vigor, refined, with silky tannins, full-bodied, with complex, well-integrated, good texture, concentrated structure and developing. On the palate it is layered and has perfumed, earthy, dried-fruit, blackberry, meaty, mushrooms, tobacco, tropical fruits and vanilla flavours. The finish is long, round, extensive and spicy. This wine is intelligent, transparent and excellent. I paid around 5k€ + a bottle. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 20-30 years and decant at least 2h before tasting.

Inside Information

Parker 97-99p/ It’s fascinating to taste the 2010 Romanee-Conti. It is as if all of the preceding wines are subsets of the Romanee-Conti, but in the Romanee-Conti we find all of the qualities that make the other wines so distinctive in one marvelously complete Burgundy. Aromatics reminiscent of Romanee St. Vivant make an appearance, followed by the sweetness that can only be La Tache, then the structure of Richebourg, all wrapped into the total elusiveness of Romanee-Conti. I am reminded of my university studies in music. There are some compositions that are so profoundly moving because they only point out the futility in trying to truly understand them. Some things remain beyond the full grasp of the human intellect. Romanee-Conti is the vinous equivalent. Anticipated maturity: 2030-2060.

I tasted the 2010s twice from barrel, once in the summer just as the wines were about to be racked and then again during my early December visit. On both occasions the wines were stellar. Like virtually all of his colleagues, co-manager Aubert de Villaine was surprised by the level of the 2010s given all of the challenges of the growing season. I could repeat everything de Villaine told me, but there is no better source than the man himself, so readers who want to learn more about the 2010 harvest may want to take a look at my interview with de Villaine on www.erobertparker.com. Overall, I am very impressed with the 2010s with the exception of the Corton, which appears to be a notch or two below the 2009. The 2010 that most greatly exceeds its appellation and historical level of quality is the Echezeaux. I also tasted the 2010 Vosne-Romanee Cuvee Duvault-Blochet but the domaine had not yet decided if the wine would be released. I will report on the 2009s in our April issue.
